Alright so again this is probably going to sound like an obvious thread. I'm new to solo PvP and so far I am whelping a lot of cheap ships, which I did expect. I look for fights in Caldari Gallente FW. My question is what tips you guys have. Could be anything honestry like things to look out for. Tips for engaging. I'm trying to get better and angry advice helps.

Thanks

Some of it comes with experience, so getting out there and losing ships is a start. Get familliar with the rock, paper, scissors that is frig combat and then start to come up your own fits. If you keep to the same area try to learn about the locals, who will blob you, who will not fight you unless they're in a bling mobile, and who will actually give you a good fight.

Also I'd recommend one of two things, either kiting so you can gtfo in event of blob....or balls to the wall dps brawling to end the fight before the blob can backup the one guy that tackled you :P

Don't be afraid to ask people who schooled you for advice, if you dont sound too bitter they'll probably give you some pointers.

Honest advice here, solo pvp is ******* horrible. It sucks. Get friends and roam in 2-3man gangs, much more fun and much more effective. If you dont have friends then join a lowsec pvp corp and roam with them (stay frosty for example).

Also, and this is if you are solo or in small gangs, fly the most OP ship possible. Thats how you get good, and once you are good fly stuff that isnt as broken.

most of the solo losses i saw on your killboard have just been because you got bad fights or you don't have enough range control. your algos was never going to beat a hawk, your mwd scram kestrel was never going to catch a garmur, the dual rep incrusus has no range control, your corax also had no range control but it wasn't going to beat a suneisis anyway. So just avoid the fights you can't win (easier said than done)

You must use t2 fits when you solo. The difference is mainly in the weapon system, short range guns with long range ammo etc. This opens up all kinds of interesting fits / fights, not to mention the dps difference.

With whatever fit / ship you choose, if you truly want to learn it, I would recommend you buy 5-10 and lose them to various targets. You will learn the strengths and weaknesses of your fit, and with each battle you will fine tune your fit.

The most important aspect is learning your engagement envelope. The best solo pvpers know the risks they face before they take the fight.

You couldn't be more wrong.

There is literally nothing even remotely close to as gratifying as successful solo pvp.

Literally nothing. It is the absolute ****, especially when OGB isn't in the picture, my God that's awesome.

I've had fun whelping cheap ships, but I do see that it is pretty dead out there. That being said a few corp mates have offered to join me and we may try to do some 2-3 man small stuff. However I still feel like I'm gaining valuable experience here.

That's also part of what I'm doing. For example right now one of my biggest issues is knowing what ship is which, so every time I d-scan something I'm sitting there reading its info. I also happen to record every solo engagement so that I can study it. But I do know what I do wrong in most fights. Also because I'm using t1 frigs I don't expect to beat faction/t2 frigs but it's all about trying. It's been a fun exercise and while right now I'm getting owned I do expect that it gets better. But yeah one thing I am trying to learn and quickly is what fights I should take and what fights I shouldn't.

The Sunesis for example was my mistake as I thought it was a frig not a dessie, thinking I could take it in a dessie v frig fight. However once I found out it was a dessie I realized it was going to heavily outclass mine. Theres also been a few fights where i've epic failed to dictate range and it's cost me every time.

It's a work in progress but I think i'm sloooowly getting something.

Keep after it. Solo life is a hard one, but it can also be extremely rewarding.

If you need help with fits or have questions feel free to drop into our public channel in game and ask: Justk pub

my $0.02;

1: all ships will go *pop* sooner or later. I consider a ship as *lost* as soon as I throw it into combat. the only variable is how much fun I can get out of it before the inevitable.

2: pick your fights with care. learning what you can and cannot engage with your current ship and fit is a long process of trial and error. there are no shortcuts really except get out and get into fights.

3: just because you're *soloing*, don't assume your opponent is. this is EVE. there's no such thing as a fair fight. you will get baited, blobbed, chased and out-shipped, regularly.

4: learn the fine arts of d-scanning and if you have multiple accounts, bringing a cloaky prober along can be very useful.

5: research your opponents, being quick to check killboards to get some insight before a possible fight can yield benefits. if you can figure out their fit, you can hard counter it. this happened to me this evening. i killed someone, they figured out my fit, crafted a hard counter to it and blew me away. some very good, fun fights all round.

6: he who runs away today lives to run away again tomorrow.

I will say what people won't say. Solo pvp is 50% knowing your ship and fit, 50% guessing the other guy's fit, 50% piloting skill and 50% luck.

"But that's like...571% or something Jack..."

Yep.

1st off learn your fit. Know what you can tank and what you can't, know how fast you can go, what damage you deal, what range you apply the most damage at etc etc.

Then, learn other fits. And try to pit your strengths against other people's weaknesses.

Use killboards to work out what someone is likely to be flying before you engage them. The last kill they got in that firetail, was it with autocannons or with artillery? Be a bit anal and you will learn more and die less.

OR just go in guns blazing. It will take you longer to learn anything and it's much more expensive.

Minmatar....we are generally unpleasant to be around....

I appreciate everyone's input and thoughts a lot. I'm only a few days into the pvp and can only do it a few days out of the week, but every fight i've taken has been exhilarating and intense and fun. I know it'll take a bit but eventually i'll start marking down kills. I learn something new every fight. Thanks guys.

If you really want to improve you need to join a corp w ppl that will fleet w you and you can learn through experience and small gang roams. There's honestly way too much stuff to type out in a forum response if you are really starting from the ground up, much of which can really only be effectively explained and learned in game with the interface right there in front of you and someone telling you what to do.

aha, this is what we in EVE refer to as The Shakes.

getting The Shakes in EVE is unlike the shakes one may experience in other games where loss isn't permanent. The Shakes in EVE are highly addictive. There is no known cure.

welcome to the club mate.

Ah, the Shakes.

I still remember my first PVP solo fight, like 7 years ago. I still remember the heart pumping, the adrenaline rushing, and the "oh ****" feeling.

Nothing will beat solo PVP, NOTHING!

I do get some of that in null sec from time to time with the corp. But right now it's been pretty low in activity since everyone is wrapping up school semesters. And while I enjoy the idea of small gang stuff, I also want that solo glory. And I'm a firm believer that the best way to learn is to throw yourself into the fire repeatedly until the fire stops burning.
