Warp Cores, are these things storing massive amounts of power? When they fail do they explode? Or are these things more like Element Zero in mass effect that allows for a much smaller amount of power to be used to warp through space. Had a really interesting talk in Minmatar OOC about these, and while my mind is still totally out on them does CCP state it in lore anywhere?

Nanobots, has mass production gotten to the point in EVE where programmable Nano bots are something that can be used in throw away situations. Like infusing them in a bandaid, or injecting them into a wounded persons blood stream. While they are used in Dust I am asking more specifically for the masses.

Are cloned mercs still something that the empires are investing in or are they falling out of favor for some reason?

Looking for some good thinking on all three of these topics. If CCP wanted to chime in that would be cool to.

I have no clue about point 1. Regarding point 2, Nanobots, there is an interesting brief passage in Inheritance:

As Raish followed Veniel through various corridors and passageways he noticed signs of an almost organic decay in places. Once, he stopped to examine a particularly large patch on a corridor wall that looked as if acid had eaten through the substance of the paneling. Veniel looked back and nodded shortly, “Nanorot. Repair systems are losing cohesion and going rogue locally. It’s far more advanced on the truly abandoned stations..."

If Nano Repair Systems are even used to maintain entire stations I'd conclude that they must be used and produced in true masses. If they "lose cohesion" unintentionally maybe one could guess that they could also lose cohesion, i.e. destroy themselves or stop working for their intended purpose, programmatically, perhaps after some defined period of time. Well, the quote above is talking about reparing anorganic systems (Jove stations specifically), so an extrapolation to organic systems might not be justified. I'm not sure, just some input I could remember.

About the question if the empires are still investing in clone mercenaries and related tech: In this news there is one sentence:

"Speaking when questioned regarding the presence of the Imperial Guard, the General confirmed that “while the exact details of this operation are classified, part of today’s objective is a basic field test of new dropsuit technology that has recently been developed.”

"New dropsuit technology", this could answer the question with yes, or at least the Amarr Empire continues research and development in that field. But then, it doesn't talk specifically about cloned and immortal soldiers. So, I'm not sure here, either. Smile

Hi there, just going to point out the big boom you are looking for in you future story would be coming not from a warp core, but the ships reactor.

I thought it was established lore that the violent ship explosions are caused by the warp core which can't be turned off once activated? Thus, the bigger the ship, the bigger the warp core, and following suit, bigger the explosion.
That is not to say ammunition, the reactor etc can't explode, but they pale in comparison to the warp core going off.

This has always been my take on it but the amount of power used to bend space would theoretically make more of an explosion then that portrayed in game. So this sort of supports my theory that the Warp core is a maguffin that allows for space to be bent with much less power being used then would technically be needed. Obviously on top of its ability to bend space.

On this it would seem very unlikely that a futures ships fusion reactor would explode, it actually should be very easy to shut down a fusion power plant without making a catastrophic boom. It is possible that the reactor would explode but very unlikely. The radio active material in a reactor is designed to take a long time to decay not decay quickly so it would need something to excellerate the process.

*Not a nuclear engineer, this theory comes from research about reactors, Wikipedia, and fanciful imaginings of super science from my imagination.*

Even anti-matter reactors will control the rate of matter-anti-matter annihilation to ensure that the resulting explosion won't blow up the entire reactor. It is really unlikely for the reactors to detonate at moment of ship destruction. I think the warp drives are far more destructive in comparison due to the amount of energy needed to mess around with space-time being contained inside.

The current theory of warp drive states that the amount of energy required to power a warp drive (Alcubierre drive) will be an equivalent of the entire mass of Jupiter. Obviously, the warp drives of Eve Online are far more efficient (enough that the Minmatar fission reactors can power them, though considering that the Minmatar specialises in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering and Nanotechnology, those reactors must be far more efficient, much easier to control and have much better size to power output ratio compared to what we have now), so I reckon probably no more destructive than an WMD (of various megaton strengths depending on size of warp drive. Frig-size probably won't be any more destructive than a tactical nuke for example) when the containment field shuts down.

A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.
