Building a Reputation

In my few weeks, I've learned all the bigwigs names, local and galactic. I was wondering what you vets have done to build a name for yourselves/corps.

I, personally, am very much interested in player diplomacy. I don't quite know exactly how to (directly) interact with the other 20k odd players in the game world however. I've made some trips to Jita and made a friend every trip but I am the (only) Diplomat of my corp; Therefore, I want to start building alliances and greater standings with the surrounding high-sec corporations before we make the move to low-sec. This doesn't necessarily require a reputation but I would think it was be better to have one. We are based out of Kor-Azor so it's a medium~ish region to start in. Any and all tips for me and my corp is appreciated!

(Thanks for all the replies on my last post. Really boosted my morale!)

Sooo... the only things I can advise with regards to "reputation" are this:

- go out and do stuff. This also includes getting into scrapes with other players. Situations you and your corporation end up in, whether good or bad, can lead to bonding experiences and set the tone for where you will go.
It also weeds out those who are not good for the corporation (either materially or socially).

- be consistent. If you like PvPing, go out and do it often and regularly. If you like mining, go out and do it regularly. If you like taking risks, go out and do it regularly.
Nothing kills a corp more than an inconsistent "tempo" in operations (except bad leadership).
And the "tempo" doesn't even need to be planned or thought out (though, it is advised you think it through a little bit). Just DUU EET!!

- have a sense of humor and don't hesitate to reach out to friend and foe alike.
At the same time, don't be afraid to put your foot down.

- realize that not everyone is going to like you. It is no biggie. Simply turn that around and make friends with their enemies. Bond with them over the person that dislikes you both.

- start small, think big. You may not be "alliance level" material in terms of reputation and diplomacy... but you can leave your mark on the world in small ways.
Example: Long ago, my corporation was in Faction Warfare. We pretty much dominated the warzone at the time and were getting bored (as were our allies). So... one of corpmembers went out to the Drone Lands in null-sec (where Russian players have traditionally gravitated towards) and began to... uhh... make rather disparaging remarks about people's mothers.
The Russians mobilized a small force to come down to our area in low-sec and "teach us a lesson."
Long story short... they left our area after two weeks. Both us and them were bruised and bloodied... but I am pretty sure we enjoyed the experience a bit more than they did. Twisted

I think, perhaps, you're asking a much bigger question than you might think.

The most valuable commodities in EVE are Trust and Friendship. The interplay of these two things affects everything in EVE, especially when carried out at an alliance or bloc level.

Sion Kumitomo did a fanfest presentation on the weird and whacky world of the meta-diplomat recently, I suggest you give it a look.

My main advice: remember EVE is a social game. Be yourself. Be honest in your dealings with others and you'll build a reputation as someone who can be trusted.

I'm only two years into EVE. I daresay my reputation in wider New Eden is one of "Mephiz'who'pheleze?".

Get a blog. Then get people to read it.

While most of us Eve bloggers are writing for personal reasons (pleasure, a learning journal, etc), there are some bloggers who have leveraged that in to massive amounts of influence. Think the Mitanni, Rippard Teg, etc. The kinds of people who go on to sit on the CSM.

If you are relying only on your in game actions to build influence, unless you are able to act through a large and powerful corp/alliance, you are going to be limited to building influence with those you interact with directly. An out of game communication medium changes all that, potentially influencing people that you've never even met.

Again, though, the key is consistency. Putting up one post every few weeks does nothing. You need to be quite prolific, posting things that people actually want to read, so that checking in on your blog becomes part of their Eve routine.

At that point, you have influence.

If you like reading about low sec piracy or wormhole pvp, you might enjoy my blog.

Thanks for the advice! Me and my group generally keep to that already but I'll be sure to get everything down pat.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check that out. I've always seen people saying that a friend is worth more than some ISK on here and that seems to be the case. I've gotten quite a lot of info from people that i've started talking to.

I am not a very... eloquent writer. I also doubt anyone would want to read about my star-travels at this point. Maybe a tips and tricks blog lol

It's not eloquence that drives blogs, it is attitude. People are starting new blogs all the time. Just be entertaining and you're gold.

Actions beget reputation, great diplomats are rare and held in esteem but I personally would say a reputation is a double edged sword, integrity and trust should be your commodities, do what you say you will; and do not say you will something you cannot.

Also to pursue a reputation is possibly the wrong way of going about it, somewhat akin to wiping one's derier before having dropped the kids off at the pool ;)

And focus...focus on your goals, long and short, be aware that with a reputation may come responsibility and with that, work...Eve can become a job if you aren't careful, always make sure you are having fun buddy and best of luck building your space empire.

I used to roadrace motorcycles professionally and I recall one of the more heavily sponsored guys once telling me that you can never get really fast by trying to go fast. If you try to go fast you will wind up struggling. However if you focus on being smooth on the racetrack and the speed will come.

I found this to be useful in most everything I've done since then both in and out of racing.
