Hi everybody, yesterday I started to play eve again, after i did it before for a month or so. I have done some mining but now I want to get into exploration. I got enough skills to fit a Heron and do some exploration but I find it hard to find data and relic sites. When i scan I see allot combat sites. But when i do find a site it's sometimes empty or it says that I can't open it with my equipement. So I have some questions:

1: Do I need to get far away from Jita to find some decent sites? I have gone more than 12-15 jumps aways
2: From what lvl of security space is it realy profitable?
3: Is a Buzzard a good ship to have as futher goal?
4: Any other tips or tricks with exploration for a newbie?

Hi,

You should read this thread, there is really nothing I can add that hasn't been covered.

Good luck!

1. It´s not really the distance to trade hub that matters, it´s the population in the area that matters. With all the new pilots coming in and exploration being an activity that can get you started in eve quite nicely there is a lot of competition out there and most of them will just do the easy data/relic sites.

I could tell you a region which is not very populated, but if you mention such things in public this will change quickly as you won´t be the only one reading this ;).

Just use the map and set the filters accordingly to find out which areas have a high count of active people and avoid those areas.

2. High sec data and relic sites will get you enough ISK in order to put yourself in a position where you can afford to lose a few ships on trips to more dangerous areas, but you will definetly not make big amounts of ISK in high sec with those sites, if you want to make decent amounts of ISK with those you will have to go to 0.0 or WH space.

However combat sites can be quite profitable even in high sec, if the loot fairy is nice to you and drops you some more expensive faction modules.

3. Buzzard is fine, personally I prefer the astero though as it also is able to shoot things.

4. Stick to cheap ships in dangerous areas until you learned how to survive with those. Once you get the hang of it you can move on to t2 or faction variants.

4.1. If you know how to stay alive in a cheap t1 exploration frig, it will be quite easy to survive in more advanced ships.
4.2 Don´t get frustraded if you lose ships in the process, try to learn from your mistakes which will not stress your wallet too much as long as you stick to 4.1.

This is pretty much covered, if you follow the link provided in the post above.

Buzzard is the worst Exploration Frigate, imho, Helios (the Gallente Exploration Frigate) is the best.

The Buzzard suffers from having only 2 low slots, while all the others have 3. Also it's the 2nd slowest of the 4.
The Helios has the best slot layout for exploration and is the 2nd fastest. If I remember it correctly it also has the 2nd best align time (after Cheetah).

If you want to be able to do some combat, too, check the Astero.

Don't use the Sisters Probe Launcher if you consider to explore outside high sec space (because it's expensive, not necessary on an Exploration Frigate and you'll probably lose it).

Consider fitting a cargo scanner. With such a scanner you could check the contains of a container before you hack it.

If you are exploring in a relative empty and safe area, I'd recommend to blow up all containers, even if there's nothing in it (just open/close the hacking window twice). This should help with respawn timers.

If you are exploring in a crowded or dangerous area, I'd recommend to focus on getting the valuable stuff and leaving the remaining cans intact. In dangerous space you want to GTFO ASAP and in crowded space this will slow down your competition. (Don't forget to bookmark the sites to avoid scanning them a 2nd time.)

You need to get very, very far away from Jita.

With the big influx of new players there are people exploring everywhere so pickings are somewhat slim, the big money is out in nullsec or in wormhole space.

The Buzzard is a great ship imo.
