This is an old site now, but it's what got me "thinking" like an EVE player and still has pretty good advice in general.

This video is particularly good at answering your question about big ships v. small ships. I consider it required viewing for any aspiring PVPer. Small ships are wonderful at certain roles like scouting and tackling for fleets. I can fly all the subcaps and still spend the majority of my time in frigates.
