Gain skill points?

How do you gain skill points?
My total number has not changed, still at 39388 points.
I was told you gain skill points by learning skills but I have learnt several skills without gaining any skill points.
I have been learning my skills by waiting for them to complete the time period rather than using skill points to learn them straight away.
Can some help?
Thanks

You can only learn on one character per account without paying extra.

To learn a skill drag your chosen skill down into the queue. It should immediately start counting down. There will be a blue button in the bottom right. That tells you the time in the queue. Make sure this button doesn't say "Start" if it does' click it.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

You buy skillbooks from the market, rightclick them, and inject them, to add them to your character sheet.

Then you drag skills from the categories at the top of the character sheet, to the training queue box at the bottom of the character sheet. The queue should go active, which will be indicated by > > > > > > > symbols over the top training skill and by the blue button at the bottom changing from [Start] to [2D 4h 3m 54s] or however many remaining days you have until the queue is finished.

Note that ONLY ONE character in your account will be allowed to have an active skill queue. For the other two character, the queue will be paused and you'll get pop-up messages about the option to activate Multiple Character Training if you pay a PLEX for each. Basically you have to pay double or triple the subscription to be able to train 2 or 3 characters at the same time.

Also, note that the skill point total only refreshes its true value from the server when you log in, and/or when a skill completes, and will not count up with each passing second.

So, if none of these things apply, and you only have ONE character, and it has skills in the queue and the queue looks like it's > > > moving, but from one day to the next nothing's seems to be happening, then create a support ticket to have the GM's look at the logs and your character to see what's going on. The support people are very willing to resolve training issues and even reimburse lost points.

OK Thanks.
So I should GAIN skill points when a skill completes. At the moment I am not getting any points
I do have a second character which I do not use, so perhaps skill points will only be given to him.
I am now deleting my other character to see if that helps.

You don't need to delete your other character. Just make sure he is not training.

EDIT: Also, are you sure you are actually training the skill, or did you just inject the skill?

No... you should be gaining a small trickle of skillpoints as a skill trains in your skill queue.

If nothing is happening, check the following;

- Do you have skills in the queue?
- Have you pressed the "Apply" button on the bottom of the skill queue?

- Do you have another character training on the same sccount?

- Are you an Alpha (Free to play) or Omega (subscription) player?
- If Alpha, what skill are you trying to train?

Where, precisely, are you seeing that skill point number that isn't changing?

I'm wondering if you're looking at 'free skill points', which are typically given by CCP when for example, skills are removed from the game.

If you have any other character in the same account training a skill your character wont be able to train.

I am an Alpha player (free to play).
At the bottom of the character window it says ' You have 39388 unallocated skill points'.
This number, 39388, does not change when I learn a skill.
I currently have one skill being trained, it has just over 12 hours to go.
There is a small blue icon which when moused over mentions Skill Injectors.
Would I need to buy them? They are very expensive though.
It doesn't matter really. As long as I can learn skills by waiting for them to complete.
Using skill points just means you learn the skill straight away without having to wait.
I just wondered if I would ever get any more skill points.

39388 unallocated skill points is NOT your ammount of total skillpoints. This is a special pool of skillpoints. Unallocated skillpoints are sometimes given as a compensation for something by CCP. If you would buy a skill injector, those skillpoints would be added to the pool of unallocated skillpoints. If you right click on any skill that's not already fully trained you should get an option to allocate skillpoints to that skill. However, unallocated skillpoints are somewhat valuable, because they allow for instant training, so you might want to keep them for later use.

Now check you Character Sheet window, click on Skills and look for a number in the top left corner. It should be right under to button labeled "Skills".

However, this also can be misleading sometimes, because this number is updated only when you complete training a skill level or when changing training to a different skill. This is probably why you can't see any progression atm.

Please note: if there are no skills in your Skill Queue (at the bottom of your Character Sheet window when the button Skills is clicked) you are not currently training on that character. In that case drag a skill you want to train and drop it into the Skill Queue (click on a skill, hold the left mouse button, move the arrow to the Skill Queue and release the left mouise button).

This. The skill points you gain passively are being applied directly to whichever skill you're training. By definition, if you're training a skill, you're gaining skillpoints.

Unallocated SP = special skill points you can apply to skills to accelerate or immediately complete them. You're not typically going to get more unallocated SP without consuming a skill injector or receiving them as reimbursement, etc.

The total number of skillpoints is actually listed at the top left of the Character window, and in a bigger font.

When you train skills, the "points" go directly into the skills, and the "total" at the top just sums up all the points in all the skills and shows you the total.

When you click a skill injector, or if CCP awards you some free skillpoints, they don't want to force you by placing the skillpoints into a certain skill that you may not want. They just give you the points, and you can "allocate" them (add them) to any skill that you want. Right-click the skill, add the points, skill instantly goes up as if you'd waited a week to train it.

You got unallocated skill points from that skill injector the tutorial gave you. It gave you 80,000, and you used up 40612 of them to instantly boost some of your skills, and you still have 39388 to boost up a few more skills if you want. Just click the allocate button and they'll instantly level up whatever skills you have in the training queue, so you don't have to wait a day/week for them.

Thank you all for your help.
I have not played the game before and not familiar with the skill points system.

In other games, you gain XP to level up, and when you do, you get some spells or attacks that you can use.

In this game, there are no levels. You buy a ship, it has some slots, where you can buy and insert various modules: guns, speed modules, shield or armor for defense, various jammers, various remote-repair, or industrial things like mining lasers or probe launchers. All of these modules become the abilities that you can click to activate / use: you shoot the guns, apply the jammers, repair your armor or shields, etc. And the ship is your vehicle/mount that allows you to go from place to place and function.

So the skills aren't big abilities like in other games; in this game the skills either unlock access to ships, weapons, or modules, or if you already have access, the skills give you 5% bonus here, 5% bonus there, and the bonuses add up until you're 2x 3x more powerful than the guy without the skills or with a weaker ship / guns / armor / shields unlocked.

You don't have to do anything to gain the skills, you just buy what you want, insert in your character sheet, and set it to train, and it takes a while. So you play a little bit with the ships you've unlocked now, and by tomorrow maybe you've unlocked a new ship, and you can try that out. It's not a fast clicking game, it's a slow methodical planning and strategy game.

You have the freedom to do what you want. There are no limitations (well, for Omegas) other than it takes time for the skills to train up. If you want to build a healer-thief-mage-fighter, you can, it just takes a lot longer. Or you can focus on an aspect, then once you get bored, focus on another, and so on.

The roles are:

Damage - ships designated as "combat" or "attack" can do this pretty well, most other ships can to some extent

Healing - ships designated as "logistics" do this with remote repair, shield transfer, capacitor transfer modules.

Crowd Control - ships designated as "electronic warfare" do this with various jammers

Group Buffs - ships designated as "command" can provide extra bonuses to the fleet with their command links / bursts

Scouting - fast frigates and cloaky ships can scout / find the enemy / use probes to find enemies or PVE locations

Tackle - ships can just warp away from a fight, so there's a need to pin them down with warp disruptors

Transport - industrials, transports, freighters, jump freighters

Material Gathering - mining, ice harvesting, gas harvesting
