I don't think a minmatar could really understand this. After all, they are attacking Amarr Empire just for something they are doing in their own residences (namely, slavery).

These tribals are such bullies! Shame to minmatars!

Honored are the dead, for their legacy guides us.

You seriously don't live in the same Galaxy as the rest of us, do you?

You do realize that for the Amarr to have Matari slaves, they first had to go to (invade) Matari space? It's not like we decided to go on vacation in Amarr and "OOPS" got enslaved. You realize the slavery issue is a LOT more complex than "Oh it's just something the Amarr do" right?

Fun Fact: Not all Matari support the Republic.

I think that IS a concept that Caldari find difficult to comprehend, yes. Not that Matari wouldn't support the Republic, but that they could do so and still identify as Matari.

The concept of being Caldari is so identified with being a functional and contributing member of The State that if you aren't you lose your citizenship and are no longer considered to be Caldari at all. This applies whether you consciously choose to step outside our culture or whether you lose your citizenship through some other means.

This pilot has an extensive history of pronounced dissociation. I have long suspected a congenital brain defect, and I consider it credit to the State Protectorate that they have successfully made use of such a compromised resource.

I see what you mean.

It's like this. We were Matari before there was a Republic. The Republic is a fairly new political construct that first took form after we were able to break away from the Empire. So there are a fair number of us who don't like the Republic or how it's run. While some famaila might argue the point, you can totally be Matari and have nothing to do with the Republic. The Republic is one political facet of the overall.

True. Also bear in mind that the Republic still wields mechanisms to preserve the lives of those of us not recognized as Matari by Tribal law. While much of the Republic can be unkind to such persons, they remain citizens as long as they wish to.

The people don't necessarily represent the republic but the republic represents the people. Think along the lines of all squares are a form of rectangle but not all rectangles are squares. Hope that helps, Pieter.

Thank you for your help. I've got my head around it, but I'm going to have to keep reminding myself of it, I think, given the sheer alien nature of it, to me.

I'm much more at home with the Matari idea of Clans, which I think could just as easily apply to the Caldari mindset. Frankly, if I couldn't be Caldari, I'd love to be part of a Matari clan. One of those big sprawling family affairs with a hundred nephews and nieces and a hundred aunts and uncles.

I think it must be a great way to live come holiday time, beer in hand, something roasting on the fire and a big mess of you sprawled around the place telling and listening to stories, reading or whatever.

Maybe that's just my outsider perspective, but that's how I imagine it.

It is a nice mental image, isn't it? I don't know where those among the Tribes I knew have gone, but I wish them the best, and hold the memories fondly.

Think of it this way, Pieter. You're Civire. The origin of the Civire is Caldari Prime, and the Raata, which became the State. If you were to abandon the State, you might not be Caldari, but your ancestry would still be with the Raata and you would still be Civire. So it is with the Minmatar. The Thukker are not part of the Republic, but they're still Minmatar. It's the shared heritage, the cultural continuity.

Just so, the Intaki Syndicate are not part of the Federation, nor are the Intaki of Waschi City that became Mordu's Legion, but they are still Intaki, and they're still of the same blood and heritage as I. It's how Mordu's Legion can in some ways be considered State loyalists, and yet still be objective and unbiased enough that the Federation trusts them to enforce peace between itself and the State on two homeworlds - Intaki Prime and Caldari Prime. There is more to them than the State alone.

Some make a distinction between Minmatar and Matari. That distinction means somebody who has no Minmatar blood can be Matari if their spirit is with us and they choose to become part of our cultures, and somebody who has Minmatar blood isn't Matari if their spirit is against us (like if they willingly join the Cartel, which takes and trafficks slaves, or the Empire). Some see that as a spectrum, some don't.

Some do, some don't.

Some might point out that certain "criminal" organizations were started by Matari and pre-date the Republic. Some might say that you can easily be Matari and not want to have thing one with Republic. Some might recognize that one can love and appreciate her sister Matari, but spit on the current excuse for government.

In the Empire we don't enslave peoples by their race. We enslave criminals and prisoners of war. Would it be Amarr or Minmatar who will start making troubles, the punishment will be the same.

You're in a slaver organization. Keep trying to make that sound like a good thing, if you must.
You're also in an organization that pushes illegal drugs on the desperate, often making their lives even worse, and that sets up protection rackets that also prey on the desperate.
The Cartel spends countless lives every day defending these activities. Defending them poorly.
The Republic's problems are many and deep, but the solution isn't the Cartel.

"Not being Amarr."

That's literally the basis for a Reclaiming by the sword. It's not racial as such (though some orthodox Amarr can make it seem very, ah, genetic); that just tends to be kind of the effect.

For the Amarr, enslavement is kind of the involuntary "entry level" of their faith and society. From this angle, a captive heathen and a criminal are in a comparable position: both "need work" if they're going to be good Imperial subjects.

I obviously like the Pax Amarria approach better.

Well. Hopefully running into equivalent tech civilizations, and having their last two attempts at militant reclaiming go so horribly wrong, might speed up the trend towards that in Imperial culture.

The main issue being generational slavery and thinking that conversion by brainwashing (that is to say denying the potential convert any other perspectives) is in any way legitimate. I'm afraid those two notions will have to go the way of the City of God and it's sponsor before there can be any lasting peace. Still the Marys have had cultural shifts like that before so there is always hope, no? But then you have to consider what happened to the Council that opposed the Mad Emperor. Shifts can go both ways, unfortunately.

Regards, Arnulf Ogunkoya.
