So do I need one crystal per gun or what so I know how many to buy?

Yup one crystal per gun. If you have the guns grouped (pressed the infinity symbol to the left of the gun rack in the fitting panel), it'll take as many crystals as you have lasers.

In space, you can right-click your laser and load a different crystal, on the fly. Allows you to control range of your gun, within the limits established for beam lasers (long range) vs. pulse lasers (medium-short). You can follow the target as it gets closer and do increasing damage to it with the shorter range bigger damage crystals.

But you have to carry 3 of each or however many lasers you have.

EDIT:

The Caldari/Gallente hybrid guns use charges (as ammo), and the Minmatar use actual bullets (ammo).

Advantage of the Amarr lasers is you never run out of ammo cause they don't use any. But they use a lot of capacitor energy. Minmatar projectiles don't use any energy at all, just ammo; you can completely drain a Minmatar ship's capacitor and it'll just keep on firing until it runs out of ammo. Hybrids have the worst of both worlds, requiring ammo AND capacitor.

Missiles and drones also don't use any capacitor to shoot. Energy neutralizers and energy vampires are a thing, used all the time, so some people fly the "no capacitor" ships. You can configure a shield tank that relies on the fact that shields replenish themselves over time (you add resists and increase the shield until the incoming damage is less than the natural shield recovery), and combined with missiles and autocannons that ship is immune to energy neutralizers.

You'll see neuts in action (against you) towards the end of the Sisters of EVE epic arc; one of the boss pirates will use them on you.

I bought 10 crystals, for each gun but when I dragged the crystal icon onto the gun icon they all disappeared from the cargo hold as if it was just one crystal. Only one crystal icon shows on one gun? Going to go test it on a asteriod field and see if they all shoot or just the one.

Iria mentioned earlier in the thread that only civilian weapons do not need ammunition. All civilian weapons will have the word "civilian" in their name. If a weapon does not have "civilian" in it's name, it needs ammunition. Lasers use frequency crystals as their ammunition. Drones do not need to be supplied with ammunition, they create their own. There are no "civilian" drones.

When you load a crystal into a laser, the crystal becomes part of the laser, so it is removed from your cargo hold (because it was loaded into the laser). To use a real world example, you have to put a bullet into a gun before you can shoot the bullet at something. You have to put the crystal into the laser. Only one crystal is put into each laser. You cannot have several different crystals loaded into a laser at the same time, one crystal per laser no matter what type of crystal it is.

If you are carrying several different types of crystal, you can change which type of crystal is in each laser any time you want. Changing crystals is very fast. If you are in space and right click on the icon for a laser, a pop-up menu appears with options to load different types of crystals, as long as you have those crystals in your cargo hold. Lasers change crystals faster than any other weapon type in Eve. Other weapons (missiles, projectile guns and hybrid guns) can change their ammo in the same way but take much longer.

Let's say your ship has four lasers. You must carry four crystals, one for each laser. Every laser turret needs it's own crystal. Now let's say you want several different types of crystals, one type for long range, one type for medium range, one type for short range. You should carry four of each type of crystal, one for each laser, and you will need to select which type of crystal you want to use. When you change the crystals you want to use, the crystals that are in the lasers are unloaded and put into your cargo hold, then the other crystals are loaded from your cargo hold into the lasers.

Incorrect.

There is a Civilian Hobgoblin.
