I'm still in the process of learning the fundamentals of the game, and one thing I'd like to learn are how to set up different overview tabs for different things. Like say if i were to do ratting on asteroid belts, or a tab specifically for mission running.

Is there a guide anywhere that shows me what different things are better for which tabs?

WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place...

You should try this link from EVE University, which also is an excellent starting point to learn the game.

The Overview Guide

http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Overview_Guide

is a step-by-step guide, designed to teach new players how to set up their own overviews in Eve Online.

The guide contains a full walk-through of how to set up a complete overview from start to finish, with the following presets:
PvP
PvP + Drones
PvP Travel
PvP Travel without neutrals
Missions
Mining
Looting
Pod Saver
Wormhole

I haven't checked any of the previously supplied links, so I might be saying something already covered there. If I am, then I think it bears repeating anyway...

Make sure you leave "gutter" space on the right side of the overview. What I mean by this is, if you have 4 columns of information in your overview, don't use up the entire overview display for those 4 columns. Make them small enough that you have a "wasted" 5th column on the right side. In this gutter column is where you'll see the icons for when you are the target of various ECM/web/scram effects and from whom.

It took me months to realize this and lost many ships in missions as a result.

Good point about the gutter space on the right. It doesn't have to be much - just enough for a tiny icon to show.

Of the links given I can personally recommend the Eve Uni one. Sit in a safe place in space in a shuttle or something and spend the 20-mins or so it will take to set it all up.

the EW icons still show, they just cover up the rightmost column.

Here's a basic overview file both for pvp as pve, text file explains how to install it.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

This must be something that changed since I originally had my problem. Definitely better than being completely hidden. Still though, I'd still recommend some blank space so that it doesn't get all jumbled with other information.

Brother Benthor's overview pack is probably the best starting point for someone new to overviews. He's been doing them for years - I remember him doing them in BoB.
