Building Freighters

Got curious about this, so looked at the five freighter BPOs. It looks like you need 6 component BPOs: capital armor plates, capital cargo bay, capital construction parts, capital propulsion engine, and for the Bowhead capital shield emitter and capital ship maintenance bay. Or you can buy the components. Then you need the five freighter BPOs themselves. It looks like the component BPOs run about 7 billion isk total, and the freighter BPOs another 9 or 10 billion. Oh, you also need the capital ship construction skill book, for another 75 million (chicken feed, considering the prices above). That sound about right?

I have this vague memory that you can't build capital ships in high sec. Does that apply to freighters?

Freighters can be built in hi-sec (last time I checked).

You can build them in high sec. Jump freighters and orcas as well.

Your costs might be a tough low; are you pricing researched BPOs or just NPC sell?

You can buy fully researched capital component blueprint copies on contract or BPC "kits" for the ship you want to build. Researching the prints to a competitive level takes a long time.

Just NPC sell. I'm not sure how much a fully researched set of BPCs costs. Probably cheaper than going with BPOs, but then the question is whether it's cheaper

These are pretty reasonable prices for researched component BPOs. Researched freighter BPOs run, iirc, 3-4bil.

A BPC kits on contract are 50 million and up depending on the ME/TE of the prints. BPO's will be around 8 billion plus 6 months to research or double for fully researched on contract.

Which is the better deal depends on how many ships you expect to build and how patient you are!

If you're only building a handful for personal/corp/alliance use, then a BPC pack is definitely the way to go. They're quite readily available on contract. Just check the ME properties of the BPCs before accepting the contract.

If you're planning on going into long-term mass Freighter production, then the BPO investment is worthwhile.
