After playing this game for 2 months and finally getting a Hyperion I tried a level 4 mission and lost my ship - it happens and I ground out enough credits again to get another one only to have it destroyed within seconds in a "safe" area while approaching a jump point.
Foolish of me to think it was safe and I might be protected by the guardians of the jump point. As a new player I could not yet afford the insurance so I was staying to the "safe" areas and also avoiding level 4 missions.
Thanks to players that killed my ship in a safe area I will now give up on this game as it is impossible to compete against long time players in better ships that just troll the safe areas.

PS: can I have my money back?

Gankers are cowards. They avoid Null/Low Sec because they can't fight people who fight back. The real PVPers. They are poor skilled players who rely on easy kills. They are the greatest carebears of EVE playing safe always, Even miners know they are risking in High Sec, but gankers, they have zero risk. Their cheap frigates/destroyers can be replaced instantly.

Some of them will make fun of you here, they will insult you, they will say "EVE is not your thing, go play Hello Kitty".

They have been saying this for a long time, they have been driving away players from EVE for years and the subscription numbers finally fell so low that CCP decided to go F2P. But what CCP failed to see is that this zero risk for gankers is what brought the game to need F2P. But F2P wont save the game because the problem didn't go away.

Did you bother reading to the part where it turned out to be NPCS?

Clearly not, that would get in the way of the "grrrr gankers killing eve" rant.

Gankers are cowards. They avoid Null/Low Sec because they can't fight people who fight back. The real PVPers are in Null/Low sec hunting their own, trying to conquer territories. Gankers, on the other hand are poor skilled players who rely on easy kills. They are the greatest carebears of EVE playing safe always, Even miners know they are risking in High Sec, but gankers, they have zero risk. Their cheap frigates/destroyers can be replaced instantly.

There is nothing hard about blobbing a single ship passing through your space with 20+ fleet members and 4 logi ships in nullsec. And theres zero risk in flying 20 man frig fleets either, their cheap frigates/destroyers can be replaced instantly too. Eve is about preying on the weak, and turning the situation to your advantage so that all your battles are already won even before they begin.

Gankers arent cowards, they just know the rules and know how to target opportune prey. They produce content, and provide us with a reminder that no where in EVE is safe. They remind us that Isk isnt everything, your fun per hour is more important. That going AFK is dangerous, no matter where you are. They are a constant reminder of what type of game we play and ultimately enjoy.

CCP disagrees with you. They have already stated that new players who were ganked, are more likely to stay in the game. People who would leave EVE because of a single gank, are not people who wouldve lasted long anyways, because one way or another, they wouldve been scammed, or bumped, or had their feelings hurt and leave. And were fine with that. Weve always known that Eve isnt a game for everyone. Weve always known what type of game EVE has been.

And we love it.

Why to seasoned players feel compelled to attack new players? What am I expecting and what/where should I avoid?
I just don't understand the purpose of PVP in this game yet.

Apparently you do not want to attempt all the missions offered to you or you will **** off your neighbours and they will attack you when travelling through their space unless you magically knew in advance to train a skill - Diplomacy to the 4th level.
On the flip side the people here have been very helpful in finding out what happened and informing you how to avoid bad things in the future.

Actually, you get a popup on your screen that does say "Warning, STEREODOG Rules, Criminals are not allowed in Caldari space! Disembark immediately or risk being shot at" or something along the lines of that.

So yes, the game does warn you. The problem is, you werent at your keyboard. That isnt "magical", its like going afk during a CoD game, of course youre going to end up dying, and the game isnt going to warn you about it either.

Glad the OP figured out the NPC issue.

I've only ever sub'ed to this game for a month or two several years ago. Not matter of enjoying the game or lack of Eve wisdom, just a matter that I'm too cheap. I've done trial accounts off and on ever since then. At least now I can get a small piece of cake and eat it too!

Folks who blame subs on Eve mechanics just aren't in touch with reality and are make sweeping generalizations that fit their own worldview. They'd make great politicians. And when politicians die, they lie still.
