Hello \o.

Yes, this is kinda funny. I have been playing EVE for a little over 12 years now and i have been wondering on why we can't 'edit' the posts we have written in the chat channels ingame yet for many years.

We can edit out posts / answers here on the forum, on Slack (limited time to edit the posts there), Facebook, Google+, ello and many other social medias. So i find it strange that we can't do that ingame.

So my question is, why can't we edit our posts in the chat channels ingame after all these years?

You could just put in an 'Edit' button under the 'right-click' menu when you are clicking on a text you have written there.

Is there any technical limitation to it or any other limitations on it that prevents that from being done?

I think that would be a nice thing to have when you takes into consideration on how important the chatting in EVE is Blink. Yes, there is a reason why someone (not me) is calling EVE Online for an advanced chat client.

What do you think about this?

Maybe CCP spends too much time in Jita Local and doesn't see the need for it. LOL! They won't do anything about scamming characters, why would you think they care about an advanced chat editor?

When they can improve so many other things, then they can improve on the chat channels to Big smile.

I don't see why they shouldn't improve it.

I think that has something to do with how IRC does send plain text. The chat channels run on a version of IRC and line editing after posting may prove difficult.
If you recall the messengers like ICQ or MSN and the like, you couldn't edit your messages either.

But I here you, it bugs me too sometimes.

Yeah, i also understand what you are saying.

IRC, ICQ and MSN is old, but Slack for example is a modern version of IRC / MSN, so it's all possible to upgrade the whole chat system even though it would run on an old chat system right now without the ability to edit the posts in chats.

It's all about taking the step of upgrading the system to something better.

But for all we know, CCP might have the full ability to add this 'Edit' button on our posts under the current chat system.

I rather not have people being able to edit their chat messages when that helps them to conceal their devious messages. The logs already don't show anything; if you can edit chat messages they will show even less than nothing.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

With Gmail, you can actually recall the email you have sent. Here is more info about it: http://bgr.com/2015/06/23/how-to-recall-email-in-gmail/

We are in 2016 (soon 2017) where things like recalling or editing the messages we have sent should be a standard feature on things like this.

Not in a game focused on ruining someone else's day and then having the opportunity to conceal that behavior.

This is not about ruining someones day. It's about having a chat system that is up-to-date (like many other things in EVE that is up-to-date today) in a game where talking with others via the chat channels are a very big part of the game.

Just because the chat system as it is now is working shouldn't stop CCP from making it working better.

The problem is that your suggestion does not make it better.

Can you explain why?

When did it start to be worser to be able to edit the posts you have made for a limited time for example?

Slack can do this, so why can't others do it then?

I already explained it several times. Your suggestion may make it easier to use but that does not mean that the chat system itself becomes better by that because my above example are usage scenarios where your easier to use system makes the chat experience for others worse.

In my eyes it will get better, because as it is now, you can write this in chat as an example: Hello, my namme is NightmareX.

Here you will see that i have written 'namme' wrong where it should 'name'.

So i then have to add this in a new post after that: '*name', so peoples can see that it was name i was saying. It has also been the times where i even have failed to correct the spelling error after the 2nd try aswell.

So instead of spamming the chat channels with lines after lines with '*whatever you are trying to correct', you can instead just edit the post and correct the spelling errors.

I see no faults in this. It just makes the chat channels more pleasurable / slick to use.

See, it's far more likely to be used to change 'Raven navy issue 200mil! open trade!' to 'Raven 200 mil! open trade!' and other similar scams.

Most typos, like your example, are blatantly obvious anyway.

Doesn't the scammers do that already by changing the text like that before they post the scams in local or whatever?

Usually they just name the raven raven navy issue and/or change the number of zeroes in the trade window, not edit what they've said in local to hide the scam entirely.

Yeah, they are still doing that. But i don't think that have anything to do with what i want here. Because once you have posted a scam of a 'Raven Navy Issue for 250 mill isk' in local or other chat channels for example while it's just a normal Raven, there is nothing in that text to change really. Because the 'Raven' text will get edited to 'Raven Navy Issue' before they post the scams anyways, so the text is final for the scammers.

My idea here is to prevent alot of new lines of posts with spelling fixes from what you have said.

Erm...

the ability to edit what you have said in a chat channel will give them the ability to change raven navy issue to raven after they have posted it.

I'm not really sure why you think the ability to edit text after it is posted will not be used to edit text after it has been posted to hide a scam instead of correct a minor typo.
