Day 1.

I just made an alpha and joined a fw corp. Took two plexes and got 27500 LP for two sites. I had help though since I had a guy in a succubus holding my hand the whole way. But novice plexes should be solable once you have the range.

Definitely join a fw corp if you aren't experienced in fw, they will help you out.

Reload has a series of videos about jumping in fw from day 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7VY_-RxbOU

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

I present... ShahFluffers-handy-dandy-list-of-dos-and-don'ts-for-being-in-militiaâ„¢

1. SET UP YOUR OVERVIEW!! Make it so that "friendlies" do not show up (helps to prevent friendly fire incidents and reduces irrelevant information) and especially make sure that militia status is above suspect status (quite a few militia members have low security status... if you attack them you will incur a large faction standings penalty... and will often be blown up at the hands of your allies out of spite).

2. Buy ships and mods in bulk (mostly frigates and destroyers) and pre-fit them in about 2 or 3 different ways for flexibility (ex, shield-fit, armor-fit, DPS/gank-fit, nano-fit, etc). Base yourself and your equipment in an easy to access station... preferably one in low-sec that many other militia members use.

3. You will lose a lot of ships in militia. Have a steady source of income to replace stuff (which can come from running complexes in low-sec FW systems).

4. Do not give away friendly fleet locations and/or friendly ship types in Militia Chat. The enemy has many spaiz!!!

5i. Learn the area well. Even the high-sec areas. This will help you when you are looking for stuff to kill or escape from hostiles.

5ii. Just because combat is more open and encouraged in low-sec it does not mean the enemy militia may not stage attacks in your high-sec area. Keep in mind that joining Faction Warfare puts you in a GLOBAL war declaration and, as a result, you can be attacked anywhere at any time. Even in Trade Hubs. Especially in Trade Hubs.

6i. When looking for a fleet, type "X" into militia chat and eventually you will get picked up.

6ii. Alternatively, go out and roam a bit. If you stumble upon a friendly fleet, they might pick you up. If not, keep looking (and try killing some stuff while you're at it).

7i. Once you join a fleet, join audio (be it the in-game EvE audio, Ventrilo, Teamspeak, Mumble, etc) and LISTEN.

7ii. LISTEN SOME MORE.

7iii. ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE LISTENING????

7iv. If you cannot figure out where the fleet is by listening, ask [politely] by typing in fleet.

8. The FC (fleet commander) is GOD himself and his orders should be followed to the letter (ex. even if you're in a frigate, SHOOT THE GODDAMN "PRIMARY" that has been called). Try to keep idle talk to a minimum (unless nothing is happening) and don't say anything when an engagement is underway. If you have a question... use your best judgement and ask after it is over.

9. Get to know the "regulars" within your timezone and help them whenever you can. Good things will follow if you make friends with them.

10. Listen to everyone's advice... no matter how abrasive it is. Chances are, they know what they are doing and you don't.

And most importantly... have fun!!

And don't worry about ISK buddy. As long as you stick to T1 Frigates at first and don't make the mistake of 'ISK Tanking' in bling ships, you'll make extreme profits compared to what you have been making as a civie.

http://www.gamerchick.net/2012/06/guide-how-to-join-faction-warfare.html will point you in the right direction.

and http://www.gamerchick.net/2013/01/the-beginners-guide-to-faction-war.html will start the income and "gud fites" rolling in.

Day one is fine if you are defensive plexing.

Let's face it; as a totally new character, you will either need to run from other players, or bring a friend. That's not the issue. The issue is whether or not you can actually derive an income from faction warfare despite having to evade other players. Which you can, if you plex defensively.

To clarify for someone completely new to FW, there are two kinds of plexes: your plexes, and the enemy's plexes.

Your plexes have a friendly npc who will ignore you and let you run the plex in peace. Enemy plexes have a hostile npc who will attack you if you enter the plex, and prevent you capturing the plex while it is alive. This npc will respawn several times during the capture process.

Now, these npcs are not terribly dangerous to similar size ships, as their dps is low and their tracking is poor. However, they do have a very strong active tank, making them hard to kill. Consider them a 'gear check' - you need to bring a certain minimum level of dps in order to deal with the npc that will otherwise prevent you from capturing the plex and earning loyalty points.

Achieving that level of dps can be difficult for a character with very low skills. Even a high skilled character can struggle if they have not fit their ship properly. So focus on friendly plexes where this won't be an issue, and you should be fine.

'ISK Tanking'

+1 for that term Lol

Also beware (If this is wrong please correct me) while you are penalized for attacking the friendlies in your corp you can freely be attacked by people in your alliance. Had this happen before.

Anytime.

I'd strongly recommend joining an alpha friendly FW corporation if you want to get into PVP or help in general, alphas can get into suitable roles in a PVP fleet especially when it comes to Electronic Warfare.

And if anything, FW is probably the most profitable way to earn ISK as a newbie alpha when you do defensive or offensive sites, you earn LP which you can buy items in an LP store with then sell. Novice offensive sites requite little DPS which an alpha can do (at least about 80 I believe), while defensive sites don't require shooting anything. Offensive pays more LP than defensive though.

http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Factional_Warfare This is a very useful guide giving the mechanics of FW.

Day one, as long as you can afford five cheap frigates.

A good ISK bankroll to start with is ten million. Five million for ship replacements, and five million to pay the ISK component of the price of various LP items.

LP are a bound-to-character currency that are used to purchase tradeable items like Datacores (used en masse in producing Tech 2 modules - I've been known to go shopping and buy 20000 datacores at a total cost of around 2.7 billion ISK in a single shot). They are also used to buy blueprints for popular ships like the Vexor Navy Issue.

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

As soon as you're comfortable with the user interface, and with the general principles of fitting ships and PVP combat. Read some of the guides linked above, and go.
