So let me make sure I have this right...

So I'm just getting started, and I want to make sure I understand things properly.

So I've started out mining for income.

Firstly, a disclaimer: I know, I know: "Don't mine!" Just to pre-empt you, so far I've found mining really chilled out, I've been enjoying it, and I'm getting a lot more chores done around the house, which is helping justify extended play sessions to my girlfriend on the weekends. ;)

Mining working for me for now. When it gets boring, I'll start doing something else. Okay? Okay.

Anyway, I've settled on a little routine: There's a 0.6 system a couple of jumps away from my home that reliably has superior ore flavors, and I have a couple of belts there bookmarked. It's taking me just just over 18 minutes to fill my Venture's ore hold with my current fit and skills (working on bringing this down), so any time I have a 30 minute's of housework or something, off I go.

In my last session, someone else was already in my belt. Mid session, they jettisoned some ore into free space, then kept going.

Now: My hold was already pretty close to full before I noticed this. And I didn't have the time to keep playing.

But hypothetically, if I'd had the time, I could have gone back to my home station, jumped into a hauler, gone back to that bookmark, and stolen that other guy's jetcanned ore?

The consequence of this being that the other guy could attack me... But he was in a Venture with two mining lasers and two Acolyte I drones, so he was unlikely to be able to do a damn thing about it then and there. So... Why not?

Am I getting this right?

Because if I am, I think I'm going to really like this game. :)

Reload has a very good Mining Video Series on You Tube (10 videos) that takes you from day one to a Retriever. if you're having low-key fun, his series is great!

You could do that but there is always the risk that he will bring in a friend to destroy your ship and you will get a suspect timer that allows other players to attack you aswell which might be a problem.

Yes, you could steal all of the guy's jetcanned ore. However, there is a a risk to this. If you loot the other guy's cargo, then you will go suspect, which does enable the other guy to attack you. Which isn't a problem as he is in a venture as you said. OTHER people can also attack you freely though besides just the guy you stole from, as in ANYONE, someone that could be in a big bad battleship. So what you would need to do is, grab that hauler, steal all of the jetcanned ore, then quickly dock in a station as fast as possible (any station), before anyone finds you. Then you wait out the suspect timer in the safety of the station.

Good to know!

System was pretty empty in my timezone: I would have gotten away with it, but eventually someone would have caught me out doing it in the future.

You are on the right path. Pirate

To say it with grand philosopher Shia Labeoufs words: Just do it! If you're looking for trouble, drop a can of your own and transfer his ore into your can. If you just want to steal the ore, get next to the container and open it. Start aligning to a station or a safespot, and once you are aligned (within 5° of your warp target and at 75% max speed) hit "loot all", warp, dock and wait out your timer (15 minutes). If you are doing it correctly, nobody will be able to attack you in time.

A thing worth mentioning is that a Venture with 2 Mining lasers can still be perfectly capable of killing a T1 industrial. The only thing it needs is a Warp Scrambler or Disruptor, which goes into a Mid Slot to hold you down, and a bit of time to grind through your hitpoints with the drones. Don't underestimate a Venture.

Here is how you do it properly.

BM the can and get your hauler. Warp to the can and make sure you sit at 0 on the can. Open the can and align to the next station. Switch safety to yellow and move the ore to your hold. Hit the dock button on the station you are aligned to. Wait 15 minutes for the suspect flag to wear of then check if the fool dropped another can.

Technically someone could bump you out of alignment right before you move the ore or one volley you at the station when you drop out of warp. Both are a big if tho.

I forgot to tell you what you need to do when the name calling starts. Remind them that no amount of words is going to get the their ore back. Also, offer to sell it back to them for a discount.

I disagree. Act hurt and scared when they start calling you names and threaten you with their powerful friends. Don't stop them, the impotent rage is the best part. But yes, offer them to buy back the ore, they won't do it anyway most of the time.

Hi op. Stealing that ore will give you a 15min suspect timer. In this time everyone can attack you freely without Concord intervention. However, almost no one will do so as they are scared of a trap. As soon as they shoot you you get a limited engagement timer with then and you can shoot back.

Really just steal that ore, there is nothing to be worried about. Make sure you insure your ship so the damage is limited if they do catch you. The Venture is actually a pretty good ship to steal ore since it has a built in +2 warp strength. This means they can't catch you easily, make sure you add some buffer tank though.

Sometimes they even have multiple full cans or even a freight container. In this case you could use a Miasmos which has a dedicated ore hold. This means you can steal a lot of ore wile having all the fitting slots free for some protection against damage and warp scramblers.

have fun

There is such a thing as a combat industrial. There is the attack Nereus and the Battle Badger.

You might have to fit two points to lock down a Venture but the main point here is that if you want to steal ore from a jet can you need to decide what you are after. The ore or a KM. Steal some ore from the guy and see if he decides to shoot at you once you turn yellow on him. If he does you can shoot back. It's called suspect baiting.

Been there. Done that Pirate

Back in my day, before the Venture existed and before mining barges with huge ore holds, jetcan mining was the norm for all miners. I was in a mining cruiser, and had a tractor beam to drag the can behind me.

Made my heist in a Badger Mark II (which no longer exist). Sure got the blood pumping, despite near zero risk.

It was actually my ore, that had been stolen by a PvP cruiser that didn't have room for all the ore, and warped-away when I didn't fall for his can-flip while he was guarding it.

Why mine your own ore like a chump? You can use an Atron to blow up that other venture and TAKE his ore! Message me for details!

You need to jump to a safe spot first due to the fact you have a timer when going suspect before you can dock or use a stargate. When you land at the safe, align to the station and as soon as the timer drops, warp to station and wait 15 minutes.

YES you are! Welcome to EvE, friend. You are getting it exactly right.

Protip: You could also jetcan stuff sitting in a blaster fitted scram/web venture, waiting for some greedy hauler to come steal yours... and the meatgrinder keeps turning.
