I've watched Eve from the sidelines for a very long time. One of the most intriguing aspects of the game was the rise of Goonswarm.

I thought it was something to do with lots of small ships having an effect against smaller numbers of larger ones.

With the arrival of Alpha clones, I wonder if this is something that would still be viable?

TL;DR Whatever happened to the idea behind Goonswarm?

The idea is still around and effective, that's one of the reasons that the alpha set was settled on when the Devs decided they wanted the alpha set to be a viable playstyle that people could never subscribe and still be effective.

Right now alpha corps are forming that are made solely of alpha clones. I joined one dedicated to fw, and I expect good times.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

Goons started to play a significant role after they where given titans and moons by RA. There was no TiDi and hords of shuttles where the best defense in game. After TiDi was introduces cheep crap fleets stopped working as a means to defend space and as such Goons stopped using them.

Frankly, the whole every-Rifter-counts-propaganda has always been just that. High SP means more HP and dps what allows you to fight and win outnumbered. Alphas will be farmed.

If you take all the sand out of the box, only the cat poo will remain.

But they'll have fun, participate in PVP, and build their killboard, even if farmed. So it's all good. For themselves and for the game.

It really isn't. They'll take 5 cute newbies over one bittervet any day.

Farming implies logging on and playing, so that's a good thing.
