Mechanically there is no difference.

If you are approaching an object, you are aligning towards it.

To "align" to something means you are aiming your trajectory towards it.

Keep this in mind when you are attempting to warp to something.
To warp you need to fulfil three conditions:

- your trajectory is within 3 to 5 degrees of your destination
- your speed is between 75 to 125% of your ship's max velocity
- you warp core strength is 1 or higher (note: warp disruption applies -1 (or more) points of warp strength)

You approach something on grid.
You align to something off grid.

That's not strictly true though, you can align to anything you can warp to (over 150 k)

Functionally identical processes, but aligning is actionable for your warp drive, approaching isn't.

Stop that or I will find you and murder your friends faces off until they ostracise you.
Though I dear say if you're putting meow before and after everything you type with them they'll probably have done so already.

Just stop it please, at least here in NC&a anyway.
Whatever about gd or wherever else.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

The effect is the same, your ship aims at the object and starts flying towards it at full speed.

However, you approach objects that are within visible range of you. Other nearby ships, or anything within the "grid" - the local area around you. The idea is that you will shortly reach the object you're approaching.

You align, on the other hand, towards distant planets or stations, with the intent of being able to instantly enter warp if you get attacked. Without warp, your ship will never really reach the object, because it's flying too slowly.

For a RL example, approach the corner of your street vs. align towards the Moon.
