I'm just curious as to whether the SKIN system supports textures being light sources, so that one might (as a random example) produce skins for Caldari ships which have lit lines along major edges.

EVE's material system supports self illuminated textures, but it doesn't support emissive textures.

That's a technical way of saying that you can have glowing bits on the ship (most ships already do) but those bits won't case light on other objects. Anything that casts light on other objects, currently is done by attaching discreet point lights, which is actually a fairly recent addition to the engine. They showed off some of the tech brackground during the explosions and graphical panel at EVE vegas this year. These are used currently for explosions, thrusters on ships, the little fires on mining barges, etc.

So, to answer your question: yeah, technically possible to have tron-ish glowing lines, but they wouldn't illuminate anything other than the ship they were on unless additional lights were attached to the skin somehow.

Now to convince the art department that a Tron-esque skin for my CNR is a good idea …

I'd like to have corp designed skins so I can put dazzle camo on my ships :)
