5/10+ complex's

You don't find these sites in empire correct? I noticed maybe one 5/10 that was an angel complex when doing a google search and noticed those are sometimes in high sec. I was hoping to solo a few higher level ones and wanted suggestions on how to go about it when they are in low sec but may have to take a friend out of precaution. I fly amarr ships and use an apocalypse.

1-4/10 are high sec, 4-6/10 are low sec, and 6-10/10 are null. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

In an Apoc I'd be looking specifically for Blood and Sansha 6/10s, but it's really not an ideal exploration ship.

hmm ok, what's a good exploration ship for those higher lvl plexes and is it worth it solo? I can only fly Amarr ships at the moment.

Ok, so first let's look at why the Apoc is bad for this then we'll get on to suggestions.

Problem the first: you have to probe and to do so you want a cloak. The Apoc loses 25% of its damage to do that, which isn't really acceptable. Now, you can carry around another fir with you, so that's alright, or you could scan with a covops and reship, which also works. Neither is ideal; both work.

Problem the second: solo BSs in low sec are a bad idea. When, not if, someone scans you down, you will find yourself pointed and killed. The signature is too big and align time too low to avoid it. And that's assuming you don't just get yourself whacked by a semi-competent gatecamp -- like the one you're likely to see just on the far side of the high second gate. The fact that your point defense is also weak is just icing.

But on the plus side, an Apoc is good at damage at range, which is what you need for a 6/10 (5/10s are a slightly different deal; 4/10s are actually quite simple but you're not going to low to look for those anyhow).

So where does that leave you?

Well, an Arbitrator is good for utility highs and mobility but lacks in damage. A Pilgrim takes the Arbi's strengths to new levels but does nothing to mitigate its weaknesses. Either is decent to good for mags/radars/4/10s but neither works for higher level plexes. A Harbinger might be able to work its way through a harder plex... maybe.

And that basically leaves a Legion. Standard T3 doctrine on this is to fit a scan/travel setup and carry a damage setup.

The only problem with using a Legion is that there are other ships from other races that do it better (most notably the Tengu). But it can work.

I'd start with an Arbi and work up from there. But if you want to haul down an Apoc for the chance of pulling a lucky sig in your home system, by all means do it. It won't be your bread and butter but that would be some mighty tasty icing.

Well, I can't use a legion yet and would take me a month of skilling to get in one. But an arbitrator is good to do 5/10 complexes? I could use one of those.

No, I'm afraid 5/10s are going to utterly destroy an Arbitrator in the last room. 4/10s are fair game though, as are professional sites. But taking one down to low and both learning the basics of scanning in low and getting to know the locals would pay off big time in the long run.

I wrote a big post and forums ate it. :(

Arbi can do 4/10 and lowsec radar and mag sites. Pilgrim still lacks tank and dps to do 5/10 and higher DEDs but its pretty nice for cleaning Radar and Mag sites faster and safer than Arbi could. Arbi is nice to try with it if you want to venture into lowsec; as its affordable to lose. Legion is nice but if you want a T3 for PVE just go for a Tengu.

Don't pimp your ship and accept that whether trough sheer luck or a well set trap you will eventually get ganked.

yeah, I can do 4/10 no problem in my harbinger and probing stuff down is easy. all my probing skills are lvl 3 and astrometrics is 4 so no real issue. Just wanted to do some higher level things for more reward was all.

I did a 5/10 in null today.

Was it an escalation from a low-sec cosmic anomaly?

Pilgrim can do the scanning and 'tanking' (run away :D) in 5/10, however you need a plate, 3 hardeners and a repper and the last room hurts until you kill the web towers. I wouldn't recommend it solo however, as it would take you ages to kill the rats with only the pilgrim. If you have a dps buddy it's okay tho.

Actually it was an escalation from a null sec anom.

Which one? It seems some of this has changed since the "tweaking" of anoms and introduction of the fill-in-the-gaps DED complexes. I don't run anoms myself, so I am curious. I was surprised, for example, to learn that Hidden Hubs escalate to Fleet Staging Post chains.

I found a 3/10 in lowsec yesterday. Spawning is probably probability (!) based and not set in stone.

Was it a Rogue Drone Asteroid Infestation or a pirate 3/10?

Yeah, it was Rogue Drone Asteroid Infestation. Didn't run it but was surprised to find it.

Your tank will proooobably be ok, depending on skills. However, with T1 drones it will take so long you will want to kill yourself. Also, some sites (not sure about these ones in particular -- I don't have much lowsec experience) have overseer rats/structures that can have decent tanks. You should check the evelopedia page for the site in question to make sure you have enough DPS to kill them.

5/10s are, in general, killable if you can tank them. 6/10s not so much; the tanks on the deadspace overseers are considerably tougher than what you see in, say, missions. Some of them have proximity-dependent tanks (get within 50km and the tank goes from good up to ludicrous) but in general I wouldn't trust a Gila with T1 drones to get the job done.
