Player Features and Ideas Discussion

Ships in this game kill other ships by shooting, whether it be lasers, artillery, missiles, whatever. I'm fine with that, but we can do better. Let us open our minds, be creative, and envision ships that fight in other ways.

IDEA

What about a largish ship type (subcap, at least battleship-size, probably larger), possibly classified as a 'salvage' ship, which would open a set of jaws and 'swallow' other ships? It would perhaps use stealth (cloaking) to close in on its targets. It wouldn't fit 'weapons' (lasers, etc), however it would have a good tank and it might fit something like webbing to slow its prey down (perhaps it would even be bonused for webs, maybe cloak). Perhaps it could fit a special tractor beam module that tractors ships into it's maw.

Anyway, here's the kicker: once it swallows a ship, that ship winds up in its cargo hold, and the pilot of the 'maw' ship is free to do whatever he wants with it :) I imagine the pilot of the 'victim' ship dies (is podded), but he could always eject before the inevitable.

I guess this would be a pirate ship, as I can't imagine this type of activity (the equivalent of 'carjacking') being condoned and encouraged by the major empires.

Personally I would love to see something like this, as well as other creative ship types that don't just "pew pew" at range.

so it can get close to targets while cloaked and simply steal the ship without a fight, and without any chance of the other person fighting back?

How is that balanced?

Can we make this poop out a smaller ship, so if it eats a cruiser you get pooped out in a full fitted destroyer, and lets top it off with a burp frigate..

On a more serious note: this would not work. For many reasons.

- Ships don't have an actual "front"... everything is seen as a "sphere" by the server. The client determines your graphical "front" based on your trajectory.

- it is really easy to close in a 2000m gap. There is an old tactic where cloaking ships will reclaim, hit their AB/MWD, and bump a ship they want to attack... that way the target cannot warp away while the decloaking ship is going through its targeting penalty.

- the server does not like players being "inside" other players. This is an old issue.

What if i like bieng inside other players specifically this persons avatar.

What if we are both in these Maw's and we try and eat each other? What happens then. We go on a double ended cormorant?
