So me and two friends are starting to play and one is in a bigger missile bearing tank like build. The other is in this fast drone build. Sorry I forgot what they are following exactly, what would be a good position for me? We are planning to do more low sec stuff and small scale pvp, and obviously the pve also.

I've read a few things about builds that jam ship systems and prevent jumping. Would this be something good to go into? Please give me some opinions and directions of where to go into more or less :P Thank you all.

Ideally, you would all want to fit some sort of warp disruption module, i.e. Warp Disruptor or Warp Scrambler. However, it seems as though you would do well with a small tackle frig, i.e. something that would have a fast lock rate and capable of prevent your opponent from going anywhere. These are always in good demand in any fleet.

Otherwise, anything else is really viable here. There are a variety of options you can go with.

1. Jamming/disruption ship, like the Arbitrator or Blackbird. These will help mitigate damage.

2. Logi ships. These heal your allies, but they will be most useful if both your friends fly the same type of ship, i.e. Shield or Armor.

Good luck mate.

Your friends sound like they want to do DPS, which means that the other roles in the fleet will be up to you.

Warp Disruptor / Warp Scrambler are definitely required; if you don't have them the target will just warp away and escape. Search for these items on the market, then right-click and show info, to see the skills required to install them (they're cheap basic skills).

This is the "tackle" role; you need to get there, lock down the target so it doesn't run away, then your friends can warp to your location and kill it. Your friends should also install a Warp Disruptor on their ships, to reinforce the tackle once they arrive, but your job will be to catch the target initially. You'll need a fast, agile frigate, and you'll need to learn to fly it so the target doesn't kill you while you tackle it. Here's a tackling guide from EVE University.

Otherwise, there are multiple types of electronic warfare (ewar / jamming). Here's a guide from EVE University, including ships and what to do.

When only roaming in a small group of 2-4 it might be best to avoid specialized roles. Since there aren't enough people to have backups for that role, if you specialize and somebody gets popped the group will be in trouble.

Aim for a more general fit for all 3 of you depending on what basic tactic you want to pursue (brawling, kiting, etc) If all 3 of you are capable of warp disruption, some dps, and a decent tank, you're still in good shape if one goes down.

A three-man gang is a fun size. I do rather a lot of three-man low-sec PVP, and I usually do it with low-SP characters on one or both of my wings.

There are basically two ways to do a good fleet composition for this. You can go Fast-Tackle/DPS/DPS or you can go Fast-Tackle/DPS/Ewar. If you go with the latter though, you want to make sure that one or both of your Tackle and Ewar ships are also contributing a reasonable amount of secondary DPS. I wouldn't generally recommend flying a logi ship in a three-man gang.

Let's assume your friend with the "bigger missile" ship is going to be flying something like a Caracal (you don't want to go bigger than cruiser hulls for this gang). So he's definitely DPS.

Your friend in the "fast drone" ship could be fast tackle, dps, or even ewar depending on the ship he chooses.

The Maulus Navy Issue, for example, is a great tackle ship that also puts out respectable DPS. The Tristan (with neuts in the highs) is a strong ewar support ship with ECM drones, and a strong ewar/DPS ship with DPS drones. The Sentinel is basically a super-powered neut Tristan. And then there are fast drone ships that are pure DPS like the Ishkur and the Algos.

So what you want to fly will depend a bit on what friend #2 is flying. If he's flying a tackle/dps ship, you should look at an ewar ship like a griffin or a keres. If he's flying an EWAR or pure DPS drone ship, you should fly fast tackle and look at something like a slasher or atron to start, upgrading to an interceptor or faction frig like the Navy Maulus later.

Another very interesting option for this comp is the Hyena. It's a very good tackler, and the Target Painter bonus will really help your missile boat apply damage.

EDIT - Also this:

You can specialize to a degree, but redundancy is important. All three of your ships should be fitting a warp disruptor or warp scrambler in case someone gets killed/jammed/neuted/etc. And at least two of your ships (ideally all three) should be able to put out some amount of dps, so that you can finish the job even if your highest DPS boat goes down. You shouldn't be thinking in terms of "This ship is just tackle and that ship is just DPS." That's for much bigger fleets. Instead, every ship should ideally be able to fill multiple roles, even if one is its specialty. That said, you still want to give a little bit of thought to roles. Three DPS cruisers will have a hard time catching frigates even if they all have warp scramblers. Two DPS cruisers and a Tackle/DPS frigate on the other hand have a much wider engagement range.

In small groups flexibility and redundancy is key. Try to discourage your friends from thinking in standard MMO Trinity terms, especially in a small group. In a small group, starting out, I recommend 3 frigates for now. Eventually you _might_ want to upgrade to 2 frigates and a cruiser, or 1 frigate and two cruisers. But you definitely want to accrue pvp experience in frigates or destroyers. T1 cruisers isn't bad though. You just need a little more income than with frigates and destroyers. Expect to be blown up lots.
