Got a new pc,so finally got to try Eve out...wow!,bought the explorer content pack after playing .

Atm my net is dodgy, new fibrebb being fitted 15th nov.,so I thought I would swat up till then.for instance "how to flipping dock" is a must :)

Main Question: I love the iian m banks "the culture" series,is there a culture like allience/corp. I can join, really hoping so!

Enough for now, hope to be cruising past you soon :)

o7 fellow Bank's fan.
To make eve analogous you're going to want to think of capsuliers as "Minds" with NPC's being normal mortals.
Once you've done that you'll have an easy time giggling away RP ing without anyone else getting onboard.
The forum, local and messaging systems fit onto this extremely well and it's one of my great love's of the game.

You're going to need this for naming convention

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spacecraft_in_the_Culture_series

Be forewarned, some of the best name's hit the character limit for ship names which is sad.

As for Alliances, there is one called "The Culture" out in null sec though my knowledge of them begins and ends there.
Feel free to hit me up ingame if you fancy ,

Right click it in your hangar inventory and choose "set name", you can do this in space by clicking either the ship or the capacitor.

FYI, ships are tools, they're supposed to be thought of as disposable and regularly replaced so don't get too attached to whatever you're flying.

They're also much like classes from other MMOs,
you want to be tank, fit up a brawling combat ship.
You want to be healer, fit up a logistics ship ext

However unlike other MMOs there's no linear progression in ships, only specialisation,
In short, bigger isn't necessarily better, unless bigger is explicitly what's called for.

Keep in mind that roleplay isn't a focus in this game (it exists, it's not a focus though), and for those who are interested in roleplay, CCP has provided enough lore that trying to roleplay as if you're in a different sci-fi universe is extremely rare.

the gallente seem to be early culture based as it is.

I agree 100% but the culture novels, particularly any with a focus on the characters of the ships,
actually lend themselves really well to Eve.
There are entire chapters that read like threads from GD , others like local (in parts and with less illiterate ship toasting)
it's actually a large part of why I stuck around in eve and started frequenting the forums.

Yeah, I would say Gallente are closest to The Culture.

Some notable differences:
-While the Gallente focus on drones true AI are banned (see Rogue Drones)
-Gallente have a centralized government

What the hell would a culture-like corp even consist of?

A mass of borderline useless players who do nothing but sit around engaging in erotic roleplay while a few hyper experienced, ultra high SP characters take care of literally everything for them? I don't really understand how it would work.

Now The Affront, a lot of corps are like The Affront.

Iain M Banks.

Classic ship names that should ring a bell if you've paid any attention to SpaceX at all:

  • Of Course I Still Love You
  • Just Read The Instructions

Another Banks fan checking in :)

You'll probably find a few old threads in Out of Pod Experience that refer to Banks and the Culture novels.

Hard to pick a favourite but maybe Excession.

Start with the Imicus.
When, not if, it explodes it's cheap to replace. Get the hang of exploration, see if it's something you like; if it's not, the scanning skills you picked up aren't wasted by any means, they're always handy no matter what you do.

Don't be fooled by the word recon in the Lachesis and Arazu descriptions, neither has a scanning bonus. Logically you'd go from the Imicus to the Helios, to get the Astero or Stratios you'd need to cross train into Amarr ships.

Edit ~ I have a ship named after a GSV, Zero Gravitas.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
