I seem to recall that you can't board a ship if it is targeted. Also, that some people would reship from their Orca to a mining ship then lock the Orca to stop anyone boarding it. Perhaps they failed in this situation if someone else managed to get a lock on the Orca before them, or maybe a rat locking it has the same effect.

I did wonder if the OP's problem was that he couldn't board the ship because a rat had it locked.

Edit : posted this before reading Sonya's post.

Normally what you do when you see someone doing this and find you can't board the Orca is to bump the miner out of the belt about 20-odd kilometers cause that's about the targetting range of a Hulk, or whatever. It also takes them forever to get back into targetting range.

i got an orca by pointing it at a wh and the pilot did not want it on his km .... he ejected and i hopped in and pulled my old ship into the ship maint.. still have that orca its named stolen apples :)

What is also effective to get a "locked" orca
( it used to work, don't know if it still does )

2 accounts, one with a cheap jammer boat, the other a pod with the skills to fly the orca..

Jam the targeting ship ( it, will explode )
other pod boards the orca


It will result in a lot of rage in local..

Still got 1 of those orca's i got that way :)
