Sentry Gun Behaviour?

I was wondering what range sentry guns in low-sec usually fire at and how they decide to fire or not? Some of my corpmates say you need to be 150km from the object they are protecting, and some say you need to be 150km for the guns themselves. I tried it out, sat 160km from the gate and shot at the gate itself, and my tornado's shields were swiftly eaten up. If I sit 150km from both guns I rarely get good hits, as its usually well out of my optimal. Can anyone explain where to position yourself for sniping?

Best place for actual sniping PVP, if thats what you want to call it, I would say position yourself about 3 years ago...

Behind a bush and or rock outcropping works in a jam. If you'd like an optimal perch I'd suggest getting a tree stand from your local sporting goods store.

you could always get a better optimal on your guns

It's 150 off the object beeing guarded. If you can't bring a sniper at optimal out of this range you have to tank them. Each sentry gun fires every 1.75 seconds and deals 56 EM, 56 Explosive, 98 Kinetic, and 98 Thermal damage per hit. Ignoring resists, this equates to 308 volley damage and 176 DPS per sentry gun. Additionally, sentry guns are unaffected by transversal and sig radius and are therefore particularly deadly to frigates. Therefore it doesn't matter where you place your sniper within the range or how you move.
