Lesson 79: Always remember yer !@#$%^-ing cap booster charges!

So here I am, back from hiatus for a spell, wanting to try new things. I had been itching to fly a Sacrilege since fighting a few in the C&P Thunderdome series last year, and I saw these new Blood Raider Guntlets as an opportunity to get me a little hisec PvP action going. Just a pretty basic "steal-loot-go-suspect" bit.

I clear a few sites, both solo and with others, and nobody takes the bait at first. Eventually, I get an engagement with a Gila (which pegged my irony meter because a Gila was what I used to fight the Sac back in Thunderdome). The pilot was PvP fit, which impressed me. Both of our tanks were holding when I noticed that I had made a fatal flaw: I had forgotten to grab my cap booster charges!

I keep the neut pressure on the Gila hoping to break tackle as my cap, and armor, slowly melt away. I switch my DPS to his drones hoping to reduce his DPS but those drones are hella tough. Just when I start kicking myself in the arse for such a monumental screwup, his tackle fails under neut pressure. At this point I have to make a decision: stay on and fight, or make a discrete exit?

I chose the better part of valor. I suspect that I could have taken him eventually, but I was in a vulnerable state and didn't want to push my luck with an unfamiliar build. One or the other, sure, but not both.

We had friendly chat afterwards to exchange "good fights"; he told me that I was his first attempt at initiating combat PvP, which impressed me even more.

Well done sir. No kills, no losses, but you still managed to remind me what I missed about EvE. Here's to hoping I can stick around for a bit.

Just one question Mr Bronson Hughes?

How can we trust a "Knight of the Blessed Mother of Acceleration" when you don't wear a black Fedora and Ray Bans. Nor do you accompany any of your posts to great Blues Music such as Sweet Home Chicago. Question

Thieving pirates discuss INTEGRITY; Anarchist gankers give us LAWS; and Whoring merc's cry then blow off clients with INSULTS. Up is down and down is up in the C&P Forum.

May I direct you to our corporation's description:

The Poor Knights of the Oh Blessed Mother Acceleration, Mover of All Things, and Her Holy Temple in Cook County, Illinois.

The Knights were founded after the discovery of an ancient copy of a film that pre-dated the EvE Gate. The language is largely unintelligible, but it involves the story of two heroes dressed in black, The Blue Brothers, who acted on behalf of an entity known as the Oh Blessed Mother of Acceleration.

We build, we discover, and we destroy in the name of the Blessed Mother, and we ask that she not fail us now.

"I seek to create content, not become content" - unofficial motto.

Diplomatic Contact: Bronson Hughes

You see, in New Eden, we knew nothing of the black fedoras or Ray Bans, nor the fantastic blues music. We knew only of the Blue Brothers and the Oh Blessed Mother of Acceleration, to whom myself and my brethren have all devoted their EvE careers.

Lesson 80: Sometimes you really just have to scratch your head and wonder "WTF mate?"

I managed to whore on this kill in Amarr. The victim had gone criminal right off of the Amarr trade hub undock. Aside from the obvious "watch your safeties" lesson (which I covered way back in Lesson 3), the raw weirdness of this fit is just...well, I'm speechless.

I need to spend more time in wormholes before I mock WH-specific fits. Derp. I still got a laugh out of that guy for going criminal in hisec though....

Lesson 81: Faction Warfare delivers. Looking for something new to try, I joined the Amarr Empire faction in FW figuring I'd give it a go for a spell.

Well, literally the first time I undock after going live, I manage to bag a competing pop-popper in Amarr. Heck, I hadn't even had time to activate my sensor boosters yet! Good stuff this Faction Warfare!

Lesson 82: Locator agents are a fine art. It's easy enough to show up in your wardec target's backyard using locator agents. It's another thing entirely to stall negotiations to join your corp while one of your pilots burns to their seemingly remote location just to put a "hello" in local to let them know that you know exactly where they live and where they sleep.

Good times I say, good times indeed.

Lesson 83: Ganker tears are the best tears. After I popped an expensive shuttle with a cheap killright on them in Amarr, a 'Nado-flying station ganker complains to me about having popped his shuttle and podded the pilot back to Jita.

Your tears, they are small, but the irony makes them oh so delicious.

Lesson 84: Waste not, want not. Given that wasn't planning on sticking around for long and that I have a large-ish pile of assets to burn through, I've been taking on fights that are riskier than normal. Taranis vs. Ishtar? Sentinel vs. accomplished FW frigate and pod killer?

Sure, why not! They were fun!

Anyways, I was going over some of my fits, kills, losses, what I enjoy flying, and, most importantly, what I have time to fly, when something dawned on me: I have multiple millions of skillpoints allocated to things that I will never realistically fly again (i.e. capital ships) and a pair of capital ships sitting around that have never been, nor will likely ever be, flown in anger.

Screw that!

I'm going to ditch those wasted skill points and beef up the skills that I actually use whenever I fly but never got around to maxing out. I've sold off one of those capital ships to pay for extractors/injectors (and ships that I'll need) and I've offered up the Thanatos (loaded with the fit of the Moros I sold) as a reward for an upcoming competition.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "Bronson, this is all good and fine and very introspective, but what the hell does it have to do with C&P?"

Well, I've found what I most enjoy about EvE is being an a$$hole. I don't have time for roaming losec or doing proper wardecs anymore, so I'll settle on being that guy who catches folks when they least expect it and give them a little RF EMP wake up call. You know the kinds. The -10s in 'ceptors. The flashy pods. The idiots hauling valuable cargo with an active killright available. And maybe I'll even get in some suicide ganking. I can log on and find those kinds of targets in abundance between Amarr and Jita and not need much time to do it. And I can do this entirely solo, so I don't need to Omega my other accounts, and largely in Thrashers, so I don't need to bother worrying about things like income.

Who knows...maybe I'll end up sticking around after all....

Corollary to Lesson 84: One consequence of realizing that I have more skills than I'll ever need is the realization that I don't need to give a rat's behind about skill training rates anymore. Clean pods for me from here on out! (Expect a flood of stupid pod losses in the near future, heh.)

Lesson 85: Sometimes overkill is a bad thing. I've been continuing my little stretch of station gaming in Amarr, trying out different fast-locking arty builds to one-shot targets of opportunity. In doing so, I've noticed a limitation of this style of play: since Arties have such a long cycle time, it's impossible to make any quick follow-up shots.

What fun is it to pop a shuttle or rookie ship if the pod gets away? None I say! None!

Enter the Hurricane Fleet Issue. Although it's slower to lock than a Thrasher or Svipul (but still no slouch at 1000+ scan res), it has one huge benefit over either of them*: if you fit one right and split your guns up into two groups, you effectively get two Thrasher-sized salvos out of one ship. This means that I can pop a target and then pop the pod without having to wait almost 10 seconds for my guns to cycle. It also means that I can load one group with EMP and the other with Fusion, so that if I do have to fire both groups at one target, I'm potentially applying more appropriate damage types (EM to shields, Explosive to armor).

I tried this at first with a vanilla Hurricane, and while the faster cycle time was nice, it lacked the alpha and tracking to make the multiple groups as effective; I almost always ended up just shooting both groups at the same target, making it not worth the effort. Plus the extra buffer, bigger drone bay, and longer lock range on the HFI are nice too.

My only problem now is losing ship kills to fast-lockers, but at least I've been getting plenty of pods while their guns cycle. Given this, it seemed appropriate to resurrect my old favorite Sabre name from back in my nullsec days:

iPod.

Twisted

*It's also got a huge range advantage, so I can sit at one spot and cover the undock and pretty well all of the arrival vectors and still have targets at or close to my optimal.

Try a rail Gnosis. You will wander why you havent always used one :D

Failing that the arty Gnosis is about as good has the cane fleet but cheaper and tankier

Also gnosis scan res.... Are we sure this thing is a BC?

Arty Gnosis is definitely on my list to try; low cost, high agility, solid sustained DPS, and impressive scan res are hard to pass up for this role. What drew me to the 'Cane and the HFI first were the higher alpha and multiple application bonuses (range and/or tracking depending on the hull) that the Gnosis lacks.

Plus, it's sexy, and we all know that looks totally matter.Pirate

try it with 4 scripted sebo's and 2 scripted tc's should out track the cane no? + it can fit a fairly beastly armor tank with only 2 gyro's. I feel rails are better for most things because their alpha is enough to volley pods shuttles and alot of frigates but where it really comes in handy is most of the time it can get in 2 volleys that track much nicer than the arty on incoming suspect/wt traffic. Bare in mind this is the highsec equivelent of lowsec gate camping and I can't think of a worse way to pass the time than actually doing PvE Big smile
