D-scan shows both. I can name my ship Lasisha Mishi's Ibis, and D-scan will show:

Name .......................... Type ....... Distance
Lasisha Mishi's Ibis .... Tengu ..... -

I take the first and last letter of a name, add a designation and an actual name. Example - a Drake would be ~ "DE-2786-A Sharez" or something like that. I guess it's the trekke in me.

3. As a bluff - this one never works, but by naming your ship after a different ship you hope to disguise what your ship is on d-scan. Eg. Call a Svipul, a Coercer or something

.

This one actually works often, employed properly. Some corps are dumb enough to name all their ships with one general naming scheme. Copy their scheme, and it makes it MUCH more difficult for them to tell what you're in.

Alternatively, fly a probe, and call it Core Scanner Probe.

Both absolutely do work from time to time.

Because if I couldn't I would have trouble knowing which is which because I have several ships of the same type fitted for different objectives, trying to find the right one could be problematic.

I name my ships to give them unique bonuses.

* "Not the face!" - tanking bonus
* "Can't touch this!" - agility bonus
* "Cash 'n Carry" - cargo bonus
* "ICU" - remote repping bonus
* etc.

Ok so I'll spell it out: it doesn't matter if YOU have a Tengu. I look at names in the Local channel and name my ships as if they belonged to other people in the area. People hunting ME will see "Lasisha Mishi's Ibis, actually a Tengu," and assume that the only trick is that you named your ship differently to trick people. That is, they'll assume it's your ship, not mine, and they won't try to probe it down.

There are a lot of examples of a smart ship name being beneficial to the player or the fleet. But before that I should back up a bit. The name function is there for basic admin. Ships in hangar, and in your inventory--the ship name is the only way to keep track of whether it's an armor fit, or whatever else makes the fit unique. Maybe it's your higgs rigged Thanatos, I don't know.

That name field is added to data tables you encounter in space, and in things like Dscan prove beneficial to other players. You know the rules and so do I never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna turn around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye. Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

I have a "mission runner" badger and a "hauler" badger. When I jump into them I set the name to something funny and when I take them back into the hangar I rename them to their purpose again.

Some corps, particularly in WH space have a callsign in the name of each ship in order to more easily distinguish friendlies, though obviously the non-lazy hostile could duplicate this.

Mostly I just name my ship Italian curse words. I don't know why, but it amuses me.

Fun fact: if you name your procurer "Praise James" and start to sneak up on retrievers you get more ice because half the miners dock up.

i believe wrecks also have the Ships Name. So if you are looking for your Officer loot in a 1000Man Fight, look for the Elite Cruiser Wreck named "Poor Guy don´t Shoot" :D
