Carrier or Dreadnaught

I used to have carrier skills. I putzed around in a thanatos from Citadel to 118.6. Following the capital tweaks, I decided that carriers were never a good choice over dreadnaughts and promptly extracted all of my carrier sp to sell and redistribute. That was probably a huge mistake. Oh well.
Disgust with CCP balancing choices aside, what we have now are two classes of capitals that I do not understand.
I am 90% sure that I am just letting my own disdain for 118.6 prevent me from seeing the strengths, weaknesses, and purpose of either class of capital. Please help me get a feel for the role of dreads and carriers as they are now. I would like to retrain into capitals, because escalating fights still sounds like a fun thing to do.

When would you choose to drop a carrier instead of a dread?

Which class of combat capital will I likely get more use out of?

It's a reasonably simple path:

Are you going to primarily face other capitals?

Yes: Dreadnaught
No: Carrier
Yes but they're almost entirely battleships: High-Angle Dreadnaught

Carriers have incredible utility.

I think the Carrier is more versatile for sure.

I disagree that carriers are better at killing subcaps than dreads, and I disagree that dreadnaughts are better against capitals than carriers.
A HAW dread can clear subcaps as well as or better than a carrier if they have the same support.
It's a wash as to which is more effective against other capitals. The carrier has range and potential for utility where the dread is just built to melt faces.
Carriers are more versatile. They can be more easily adapted to different scenarios, but I don't know if that versatility and utility is going to be more valuable than a heavily tanked anti-subcap or anti-cap dread. Especially when the dread doesn't necessarily need to have several ships dedicated to holding its targets down. However, carriers don't need to be right next to their targets. As a counter drop against dreadnaughts, several high dps carriers could swarm and destroy the immobilized dreads from a couple thousand km away. Assuming the dreads are prevented from escaping. Assuming that they do not have carriers or kitey bs of their own to counter the fighters.

I don't believe that I know enough about either in their roles to be able to say which would be more useful. I am a lot closer to a max skilled dread than I am to a max skilled carrier, so that is probably the route I'll take for now.
Any further opinions are greatly appreciated.

Carriers have incredible utility.

This.

This is just a fact. It's a simple answer, because that was a simple question. Dreads are for other caps and stations of various types. Carriers are for *.* else. Carriers are also cheaper. There was a time when carriers were staples of bubble camps. They still should be.

Carriers are nice for not having to siege (read: immobile for 5 minutes)
And can send fighters to do their bidding from some place away.
It's a different game style which is popular for ratting and level 5 missions.
