Well if you do great, but after my dealings with your corp so far, you'll forgive me if I dont hold my breath!

Sorry but he is trolling you.

I tried to join a corp once, they also demanded full API access and upload my character to a public website. When I had done so, they raised the skillpoint-requirements for their corp, in fact they did it 3 times while their recruiter was processing my application. After that a lot more bureaucracy came with requests to tell them the dates my API keys were created, then that I should fill every empty character slot... and then I withdrew the application.

The valuable lesson was, do not trust anyone, even the minimum trust to give them a API key is too much and never ever pay fees, security deposits or anything. If they are not happy to have you with them, then you have already wasted your own time.

....as if 10,058 Goon voices cried out and were suddenly silenced.

I dont see a problem with giving the full API. Most of good corps demand this. Meta gaming is a serious part of the game, and you can never be to cautious about spies joining your corp. So they can see how much isk and assets you have? big deal. without you being stupid enough, they cannot steal it, even with API key.

Full API keys are an entirely valid piece of information to request from someone who wants to join your corporation.

Or perhaps you haven't dealt with lazy thieves before...

CCP mostly sucks at their job, but Veritas is a pretty cool dude.

From the API page:

Quote:
Full Access API Key
Allows access to all your character information available in the API, including wallet and market information, and your corporation's information as well. Please be careful about who you give this key to. See below for more information.

What is an API key? What do I use it for?

The API key is a private code that identifies your account. Combined with your user ID, this key allows third party programs and web sites to access information about your characters and corporations. Using this data, such utilities can improve your EVE experience by providing useful functionality such as wallet exports, skill training notifications, and other tools.

Is this safe? Can someone steal my account?

It is safe to provide your user ID and API key to applications and web sites as long as you are prepared to allow the application or web site to see your character and corporation information.

Sharing your API key, full or limited, does NOT give people access to your account. Sharing your account password would. The API key only allows the recipient to view your character and corporation data but gives them NO control over it. They are NOT able to log in to the game or post on the forums with the API information. The API key is in no way generated from your account password - there is no way to calculate your password using this information.

This is the only safe way to give programs and web sites access to your data. Do not give out your account username or password to any person, program, or web site. Please keep in mind that doing so is a violation of the EULA and can lead to account termination.

I still don't like it.

If you are not certain that the web site or program asking for your API key is safe, please do not give it to them! You are responsible for any usage of the information obtained by using your personal API key.

I gave someone my API key and now I want them to stop using it!

If you believe that someone is misusing your API key, you can create a new one with the buttons above. Please note that all programs and web sites that are using your old API key will no longer be able to access your data unless you provide them with the new API key.

You can view activity on your API account by using the API Access Log viewing page. If you believe someone is misusing your API credentials, please regenerate your API keys using the top half of this page.

My question is: how can you be careful who you give your API to in a game where you are not supposed to trust anyone?

How would a full API detect a thief? Maybe detect a spai, but a thief? Perhaps one of the few super-thieves, but not your more numerous wannabe's..

I am not out to publically name and shame people. If you genuinely are interested please Eve mail me and I'll send them to you later when I am able to access my home PC again.

I never understand why people decide to hide names and any details which can really help someone to evade the problem.....

Would you give your reason why those guys who scamed you can continue freely?

BTW: as recruiter i request full API too. This doesn't mean i will scam or something. But no one wants to have strangers in corp. Hiding full API is a first sign that person will not be good and open member.... Most likely.

It's the same mentality that allowed the player to be scammed inthe first place. Namely, misplaced sense of loyalty.

There's a link on the Something Awful forums to the full and proper process for applying to Goonswarm. Any deviation from that established process and you're simply asking to be scammed. You first have to be a paying member on SA Forums as well, just btw.

There is no other way, it's via the SA forums or nothing, unless The Mittens himself holds your hand through the process.

I know, I've read through it several times, there is no way you should be scammed the way you have been if you had followed the proper recruitment procedure. Perhaps some research into it before jumping-in should have been done ?

^ you might find this interesting to listening to. It goes into some depth to explain why people like you fall for such scams.

also note that https://goonfleet.com/ is the "real" GSF website which actually warns you of recruitment scams https://auth.goonfleet.com/newbies/

while http://goonfleet.net/ and http://goonauth.com/ are private sites that only exist for recruitment and protection fee scams. I guess that for a low fee GSF members can buy access to these fake sites (that's the way things were done in TEST).

edit: thought I'd add a link to the legit GoonWaffe recruitment thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3447025

While someone else probably already stated it earlier in the thread (TL, DR);

Do not apply to a corp that asks you for ISK or assets. Sums do not matter. In the vast majority of cases such a corp only wants your ISK and/or assets and you never get in (or you are quickly booted after you give away your stuff).

In somewhat related shocking front-page news, Goons scam.

Google "Join GoonWaffe" and this will likely be your top hit https://wiki.goonfleet.com/Joining_GoonWaffe

Quote:

Joining GoonWaffe:
If you gave isk to join GoonWaffe then you were scammed and you're **** out of luck.

To join GoonWaffe, follow the directions below.

Requirements & Information
GoonWaffe is NOT a publicly recruiting corporation. We are all members of the Something Awful forums, or well-known friends of someone who is a member. To join GoonWaffe you MUST either be a member of the Something Awful forums and have been an active member for at least 3 months, or you must have a sponsor who is a GoonWaffe member of good standing who is willing to vouch for you, meets the above requirement, and has been a member of GoonWaffe for a month. If you do not meet the above requirements then you can not join.

They don't hide the fact that they're going to scam the **** out of anyone that doesn't take a minute to look before they leap.

This kind of thing is why I just have no sympathy for the game or it's player base anymore, it's usually the case in communities that there's a small group of douchebags that go around causing trouble for everyone but in this case it seems to be the other way round where this game is quite blatantly ruled by douchebags and it's showing even in CCP's design decisions.

OP, no decent corporation will ever demand money for joining since it costs nothing to bring people in, they may tax you after joining but that's about it, next time, go with your gut instead of listening to a scammer trying to reason with you.

You mention alarm bells 4 times in your post yet not once did you stop and think that maybe, just maybe the whole thing reeked of scam?

What do you do when the fire alarm goes off, keep sitting there till the flames envelop you?

I agree. It has to do with what CCP defines as "hardcore" which is just CCP sanctioned griefing. This game has so much potential but there is a fly in the ointment and CCP refuses to see that EVE currently caters to "douchbags" most of all...which takes away from the game as a whole.

Apart from which, you should only ever give out your LIMITED API details. Full API is a big no-no. Big red flag should pop-up in your mind if you see a requirement for your Full API. Good thing you saw that part of it.

Hey look, actions have consequences. Nice work passing the buck for your own actions and expecting CCP to nursemaid you through every decision you make with your life. Do you cry to them when you lose your pew pew ship to rats? Do you open up a thousand petitions when you can't fit your ship correctly?

It's almost like CCP gives you the opportunity to think and play for yourself without holding your hand at every single opportunity. There are many more of us who prefer it this way. We all lose things and we all learn from them. It's called being an adult.

Actions have consequences.
