So I read that EVE was inviting back old players with a Free to Play status. I last played about 5 years ago.
I was curious to look around and see if their was anything new to do.

Is this F2P a thing?

I tried logging in but with no luck, just this message:

Account EVE-SSO-CONNECTION has been disabled
Last Login: 2011.02.15 23:38
Number of Visits: 3190
reason: Account subscription expired!

Right now I opened a free trial account, but the thought of starting that never ending skill tree over put me off.
I'd like to get access to my old accounts though and perhaps subscribe again.

You are 3 weeks too early. Free to Play starts on Nov 8th.

Ah; ok, got it thanks.

I might just pay to start now if the GMs ever get to my password reset request on my main account.
Good to see they are as responsive as always! What?

Yes, CCP seems not to care care much about their customer service experience.

It's not fully free to play at least that's how I understand it. Sometime in November you will be able to log on but your account will be changed to an alpha account which has certain limitations. I'm not sure exactly what all of the limitations are but my understanding is that they get removed once you pay.

Some of the things that I've heard about are some skill point limitations. I think it's something like 5 million skill points and I think you are limited to once race's ship line up. Sorry I don't know much more than that but you can read up on alpha clones if you are curious.

The free to play "alpha state" option will have restrictions.
- skills are racially locked. In your case you will be able to fly Caldari T1 cruisers and below.
- skillpoints are capped at roughly 5 million.
- multiboxing is not allowed.
- industrial skills are severely limited so people like me can't create an army of free industrial characters.

Within those limitations, most career paths are open and there are no restrictions on how long or how often you can play. You can upgrade to "omega state" at any time by paying the subscription fee and have full access to the game.

There are a couple of devblogs if you want more detail and the update site shows everything announced for the November 8 expansion: https://updates.eveonline.com/coming/november/

Why can't I login on singularity with my expired account? It was clearly stated during alliance tournament that players could login to SISI and test alpha clones. This is not applicable to old players? or did they just lie?
