Feedback from a first time viewer

This is the first time I have watched the AT and I wanted to leave a little feedback, although I guess this isn't anything you don't already know. I was continually thinking about how difficult it would be to get traction with a more mainstream audience.

One problem is that you need an intimate knowledge of practically every ship in the game in order to understand what is happening. Also, even if you do know the ships the top half of the screen is pretty much useless at all times on any screen smaller than a full size monitor because you can't read the tags.

I would love to see a strategic overlay where ships are colour coded with spheres or arcs (red for ECM, pink for other tackle, green for logi, blue for neuts, yellow for damage etc). The radius of the sphere/arc would also indicate effective range of the ship in that role.

So a bomber would have an enormous yellow sphere of influence. A Svipul would have a relatively small pink sphere. I don't know how you would do multiple roles. It wouldn't be perfect but it would make it much easier to understand positioning. New viewers would also get a better idea of different roles and be able to understand what that green ship was doing even if they couldn't remember what an Oneiros was.

Anyway, thanks for the effort. It was interesting to watch.

why are you giving svipul a small sphere?

this ties to knowing your ships....range is small for svipul but she moves fast. One of her "op" issues actually. You think about how you will handle svipul and other ships long before that sphere even touches you.

Other ships also double dip. So you'd have mixed spheres. example: sleipnir liked for links and damage. it can be both.

Ranges...they are the stock ones in games, assume skill level 5. Only the flagship can pimp mods that may have longer range.

Rest only get t1/t2. So your overlays would actually give intel as well. Webber's sphere >10...why is that? Besides stuff modeled on boat we don't know until we see the km's if they died. We aren't supposed to know if information warfare links in play....we and the contestants get to guess that really. Everyones e-war sphere now X% larger...we know info links are in play.

Why its in a teams best interest to not die. No loss mail review, we can only guess as to setup. Become a loss mail, we know how they seem to like to fix ship X....so if/when they rerun it later matches its added intel.

I don't really care about the details tbh. I'm sure others would come up with stronger designs. There just needs to be a more intuitive way for people to understand what is happening on the field at a glance.

As a former competitor and avid viewer I also think that the visual content of the broadcast needs to be improved. Most of the time you spend watching the bottom part of the screen because its the only place to get any real information.

In my mind the strategic overview should really be on the main screen most of the time and just switch to ships as something visually important happens up close - like when a shiny ship explodes.

Perhaps a strategic view that is a little easier to see and shows vectors and maybe even colored flashes on the ship icons to show when a ship is taking damage.

All of the very complex positioning in the actual fights is lost in the broadcast to be honest and this is often where fights are won and lost. However because there are 20 ships the two commentators can themselves only really capture half of what is going on for the viewers.

Perhaps the folks that did the broadcasting in the first weekend might be able to innovate because for CCP to improve this it will come back to the old chestnut of "only if their volunteers have the time".

Not griping at the CCP volunteers here either - big shout out to all of those volunteers who have organised this thing. For all its faults its still epic fun (and stress). You should all be proud of providing your dedicated gamers this event. We just need a better way of being able to showcase it.
