My current struggle...

Thank you everyone for the great suggestions for fittings and answers to questions. This thread has given me something more important than any single fitting: something to focus on. I'm going to start with Lulu's first fitting suggestion and see how it goes. My skills are such that I can run all those modules at least in the T1 variant, so if I like the general feel, I'll spend the time skilling up to the Tech 2 variants. I will also look at my core engineering skills and see how I can improve that. So now it's on to EFT to see what I can actually put together while adding some things of my own. After all, if I can't experiement, where's the fun in that??

A quick question on the geckos... I've heard theym highly praised, but goodness, what was it, 60 million isk each? if I made that investment I think I'd have a nervous breakdown every time I launched them! Are they really THAT good?

Thanks again!

Also make use of the test server. Switch to Singularity on the launcher. Every item in the game is seeded at 100 isk, so you can mess around with fittings easily.

Geckos are very good, it's up to you if you think they are worth the price tag. That's a purely subjective call.

Geckos are indeed fantastic.
But
They're reliant on heavy drone skills so you're going to want to have those else you'd be wasting money.

Are limited in numbers I.e. CCP gave us all a bunch of them a few years ago and there's been none new since so if you think they're bad now just wait till November.
Regardless they're not going to compensate for much in the way of skills,
Personally I wouldn't recommend that you take them anywhere dangerous for a little while. And keep a close eye on the rat agro if you do get them.

So I took Lulu's fitting out for a spin and I really liked it, though my skills might be letting me down a tad. I am outputting just shy of 400 dps between drones and three 200 mm prototype gauss rail guns. Is this about right or am I way behind the curve? I only found one serpentis phi-outpost and it felt like it took awhile to work through the first room, though I was never in any danger myself, shirkds never went don past 70%... but then I got into the second room and another stratios dropped in and snaked the main boss guy away from me. He had to have combat probed me, right? Because I got the key for jump bridge thing... I think I need to find some more out of the way systems. The ded sites I ran were fun, but I only found that 1 level 4 and a couple unrated sites that I think were lower on the scale.

In other news, I'm thinking about hopping in something cheap and flying out into low sec and staying there until I die in a fire. I have gallente frigates to 5, what would you suggest I fly and how would I fit it? This is hopefully a cheap ship / fitting because I know I WILL die... and does anyone have any basic tactics rather than just flying around?

You guys have been great!!

The price efficiency in EVE has never been linear. Instead it is this nasty ascending curve that becomes steeper the more marginal the benefit over the previous item. Resulting in prices where a top tier module can easily cost more than the ship it is put on.

Add to this the finite supply of geckos and we have our current price spectrum.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

So I just did a skill inventory using uni-wiki on core skills, prioritizing anything that boosts cpu and cap abilities (and more). . . I had no idea there WERE so many. Needless to say I now have about 35 days worth of training to get all the ones I lacked up to level 3 or in most cases 4. I think that will drastically increase my ability to put out the pain, whether on rats or turning pirate myself. I must be a real Eve pilot now ecause 35 days doesn't even seem that long to me anymore!

If anyone can offer some pvp solo-pirate ships/fits, I'd be much obliged. I just bought a tristan and will be messing around in EFT a bit, maybe I can come up with something on my own. But any help would be great! We'll see!

That's the turning point :) The moment you think, 'oh sweet I have 35 days (or 35 years lol) of useful skills lined up, now I don't have to worry about changing skills or choosing what to train next'
