NPC starter corp crashes the AT party

A curious thing happened this past weekend. A number of characters still in their NPC starter corp - Center for Advanced Studies to be exact - experienced the Alliance Tournament in person for the first time.

We won two matches and lost two matches, making it into the top 32 this year.

CAS is a somewhat unique group in New Eden - many of us have never left behind our very first corp in EVE, plying the systems in high, low, and null (even SOV null) with our NPC corp main characters, partly for our own reasons and partly to help out other new players experience all that New Eden has to offer. For the majority of CAS players I fly with, it's only our alts that are in the player-created alliance CAStabouts.

This year, CCP Logibro was generous in allowing those of us with such alts in the alliance to participate in the AT with our NPC corp main characters. This was my first experience flying in the AT and I had a blast. It was also the first AT experience for other players who have been in New Eden ranging from 5 months to 10 years. With this change we had enough players almost every practice to field two full teams, and we had enough depth during the AT to pick from several different comps.

During the AT, many people say the matches only get interesting after the second elimination round is complete, once 16 teams are left, due to the number of blowout matches that happen. While this is generally true (our two losses and one of our wins ended in a 100-0 score) there were also gems folks might have missed, like a highsec alliance taking out a PL Etana, plus this one particular match between CAS and IT'S ONLY PIXELS that was a literal nail-biter that came down to the wire. Final score was 60-55.

Many thanks to CCP Logibro for allowing us to fly our mains this year - you allowed many players, new and old, to experience our first AT, we had a lot of fun, we learned a ton (both about PvP and about teamwork), we're hooked, and we look forward to coming back next year.
