Why people come back to EVE

Basically this, after all the who ha over the new games that came out (ED, NMS, SC), all those games are ok however the reason I came back is because of the level of depth this game has, I am still learning to do stuff years later, the key to people coming back is for the other games to not commit to building many paths to use.

For me so far, ED looks good....but lacks the ability to carve out a nitche for yourself, you are a stamp same as the other stamps.

SC is too hard on my machine and runs too choppy at times and also doesn't have the "make your own story" depth because of lack of paths

NMS...I'll just leave that there.

If anything the other games should take a page from eve's book and actually build some depth to the things you can do in game, anyway I don't think EVE is going away soon and I just loath thinking about going back to an existence in the other games and both hate and love the way you can interact with others here in EVE, anyway this is to toss something else besides eve is dying.

Eve's numbers are back to 2006 levels of activity, the game is more stale than ever and has a terrible reputation among gamers as either boring or too-late-to-catch-up and they are making it free2play out of desperation. So you might be wrong there. It's been declining significantly the last 3 years and it's the large number of people with 4+ accounts that are keeping it afloat because they've invested so much already.

Someday, something will come along and kill it, probably in the next 5 years. Either that or it will change completely to some kind of proper f2p + p2w model.

I tried out STO. I realized that I wanted some sort of internet spaceships.

I also wanted something that Eve has that STO doesn't: The ability to fly straight up if the place I want to go is directly above me.

I personally have never left Eve. The longest break I've taken was when I went on a RL vacation for a week. (Although my account turns 1 year old at the end of this month)

I think having Alpha will bring a ton people back because they'll be able to try it without paying.

There's definitely competition today, yes eve is a bit dated but honestly it is a far more interesting place then the others I've played.

I tried to quit once. I really did! I did the twelve step program and everything. I was clean for months, man. I had friends and a family. I was in school.
Then the cravings started back. I resisted for as long as I could, but after sitting through Star Trek; Into Darkness I found myself downloading the client.

I thought I could handle it, but it was like I was a spectator watching myself go deeper and deeper.
I found myself with a tourniquet around my arm in the basement of my parents' house with a needle full of plex.
My hands were shaking. I was breaking out in a cold sweat.
"You don't need this. You can still say no."

I clenched my teeth on the band and squeezed the syringe.

other games are flashy or fun

but none of them....stand out. after playing them i eventually get the sense of "been there, done that" from previous games.

mostly cause i've played several flight simulators.

and the more i play them, the more i feel like i could erase an entire week or month of my play, and i'd be in the same spot i am now. no progression. no epic moments i feel like i was really a part of.

and no......attachment. the playerbase tends to feel like the normal CoD/LoL playerbase of hyperactive mouth breathers.

compare those to EVE
where there really no other game with the sense of scale or freedom
no other game feels like it.
every day i put into EVE i feel months later (if only because i've learned from the mistake of bringing a freighter into Uedama and narrowly making it out after 3 bumps. or i find a new build for my ship that i never considered before)

and the playerbase really is........unique. sure we bash eachother left and right(die die die!). but the moment the battle is over, gf and memories when you meet them in jita. laughing about the fight.

the story is epic as well. not just the npc story, but the fact theres an actual player story made by players. how many games can claim that.

EVE is EVE. no one else is like it.
everyone else is just clones of eachother.....cheap knockoffs.

I never left EVE and I rarely play anything else these days except just maybe screwing around with something on my PS4. I've played a lot of games in my time and I've tried some of the newer stuff (my system can't handle any of the SC stuff that is available, but I have E:D on my ps4).

I had a startling revelation recently. I thought about the stuff I like in EVE, and I thought about other games, and I realize that I grew out of 'gaming' years ago. EVE is the only thing I really like to play, after my time is done with EVE I'm probably not going to spend much time with video games.

I was kind of shocked at the revelation because so much of my life has been about games, but now I just don't feel like spending time in virtual worlds being told some fanciful story (which is what most games do). I've found that I don't care for the 'time wasting' aspect of games, I don't have enough time in the day as it is. But EVE is the exception, I can spend a couple hours a night playing and don't mind that I'm losing track of time. I think the big draw is that how I play EVE has little to do with the storyline and everything to do wit interacting with other people.

I figure I'm rambling a bit, but EVE is just something ...else.

I came back because it's free now. Sure things are limited, but so is my cash flow (for now) ,so this has been a wonderful piece of news. Having said that, the amount of changes in the last 3 or 4 years is rather overwhelming.

At this point, I can't tell if I am constantly coming back or constantly leaving. Do I keep re-subbing or do I keep un-subbing?

My initial stretch in-game was about 3-4 years (2008-2011...to include one FanFest). Then the breaks started along with the returns. But the breaks got longer and the returns got shorter.

My last 3-month sub just expired two days ago. I was logging-in once a week and not leaving station. Just ship-spinning and checking various things on the market.

We'll see how long this break goes.

Getting new or old people to try is one thing... keeping them in the game is something else entirely.

I left EvE about a year ago because I got my second kid and I simply did not have the time to play like I used to. In a good day I had perhaps an hour or two late at night... at best... and weekends were pretty much off limits as well. I could not participate in just about any group activities because I would have to leave in the middle of the activity with 2 seconds notice etc. So I unsubbed and left the game.

Now we got the Alphas and I am back... but the alphas are so limited that I can not do any of the stuff I loved doing back then.

Hell, my main is left in the middle of null with a ship he can no longer fly... so logging in with him is kind of off the scale right now. Need to sub in order to get him away from there... but considering that the kids take up even more time now, and the fact that I am in the middle of moving places with everything that come along with that can of worms makes subbing not an option.

So my stay with EvE was the shortest one I have had like ever :p Perhaps I will sub when the move is over and things have calmed down, but for now I will just do other things.

The reason I come back time and time agains is that there simply is no other game that comes close to EvE.

Every other game puts you in swaddling and wraps you in thick layers of fluffy cotton to keep you safe and warm...

EvE comes at you with as*es and elbows screaming at the top of its lungs... If you are a nice guy, you can be that... if you are an a**hole you can be that too.

You don't find that in (to my knowledge) in any other game, and that is why I always come back
