Recently, I've been thinking about making an Amarr character and going with that culture/race. But it seems everyone says Amarr ships are horrible and to not bother. What makes them so terrible?

Hearsay is for idiots, form your own conclusions.

Amarr ships certainly have their uses.

Jealousy.
And being degenerate heretics.
Amarr boats are excellent at what they're designed to do.

Like any other race of ships, some of the Amarr ships are crap, and some are excellent.

I fly all race types, each has their good points and not, do what you want, when you do what others say you are removing your own ability to choose for yourself.

Lasers used to be too good, now in most cases they are down the bottom of the pile, as reflected by combat stats for years now. Certain ships have kept them from looking as bad as they are on EVE Kill though, but the CCP stats show lasers under-performing.
There is also the three way weapon system split they have going on between Lasers, Drones & Missiles.

So yea, you'll find the odd gem, and some good niche ships, but on the whole they've been left to languish because of historical fear of lasers becoming OP again.

Sounds like a lot of RP'ers picking sides for RP sake. Maybe they dislike their cultural ways of thinking in terms of lore. Or maybe they just hate the color gold; who knows at this point. It could be anything, even a ridiculous reason possibly.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Ignore the heretics.

Lasers rule.

We also have the coolest looking ships.

Also cool skins 🙃

They can be a bit slow and are very cap intensive, but also very tanky and carry lots of drones.

Just as capable as other races, but in the kiting meta not as popular as faster alternatives.

It is because lazerz are damage locked to EM and thermal only. You have to rely on all damage types if you are flying an Amarr ship that has missiles. They are also mostly locked into armor tanking but there are exceptions.

Personally, I love Amarr ships because I think they are the best looking ones and I am Minmatar. I went Amarr though when I was in wormholes because T1 ammo crystals do not break and is great in keeping ammo costs down while doing the pewpew on Sleepers.

As long as you run mission/rat/anomalies in Amarr space, you are golden. If you leave Amarr space, pick another ship to fly.

Amarr ships are ok, some are even beautiful.

Roleplaying an Amarr, though, acting like a pro-slavery pompous pseudo-religious ass, is rubbing a few people the wrong way.

+1'd, Lol'd, and there is a 82.4% chance I lost some coffee onto a server rack.

But on topic: Fly what you want, as has been mentioned, there are good ships, there are bad. But honestly, good and bad is just a matter of opinion. Fly everything once, some things you'll never want to fly again, but if you don't try, you don't know!
