With discussions often dominated by the maudlin topics of being space monsters, murderers, and artificers of pseudo-intellectual tautology I think it's often overlooked sharing the small pleasures in life. And if there's one pleasure shared among any truly cultured civilization, that's brewing beer and getting drunk on it with your friends and strangers who become your friends.

So feel free to share your favourite beers (or times drinking beers) since I'm always interested in sampling cultures through libation. I'll offer up two of my favourites:

Sokuuya:
A traditional Caldari, "Winter Lager," or Northen Beer. Differentiated from the, "Summer Ales," or Southern Beers by its use of kresh leaves instead of hops as a bittering agent and the use of a slow fermentation yeast strain while in cold storage. The result is a clear, crisp and clean lager with a nicely carbonated body and just the right amount of bite on the palette. Although many foreigners often remark it is too bitter, the only response to that is if there's one thing any Caldari enjoys in life it is a well developed bitterness.

Fjalkur: Stumbled upon this Thukker ale while in Evati. It's some kind of dark wheat beer - not sure how to describe it. Supposedly it's made by the Tribe only on certain planets in the Great Wildlands where it's fermented out in the open by wild yeasts instead of cultured ones. Not sure if that's true or not but the end result is delicious with its full body, sweet taste, smoky aroma, and just an edge of pleasant sourness.

While I tend to prefer wines, a number of fine beers in the Empire come to mind, the Amarr even bless their grains and keep the 'good stuff' for consumption in the Empire. In particular the following two come to mind:

Imperial Stout - A light dark beer with a milky, silky texture that it is velvety smooth to drink. If poured right, it tops off with a classic, beautiful creamy beige foam. The taste has overtone of Roasted Barley, Chocolate, Caramel, with a moderate bitterness

Domina Stellarum - A light pilsner, dry without losing fullness, floral hops and a gentle herbal side. Brewed in honor of the Late Empress Jamyl I and a worthy toast to our new Empress Catiz I. My personal favorite if I am to drink a beer.

Whiskey if I have it. Whatever is laying around the house if I don't. Only two reasons I drink: Bad things have happened and I need a short coping aid, or I have a rare fancy to have a drink (those normally happen on roams)

I want to paint my ship Periwinkle.

Oh sweet Maker, some of the things I've said and done while drunk on a roam have made me regret ever waking up the next day.

That was more the Crash than the vodka though, right?

Your drunk fleets will never match the level of stupidity of a Pandemic Horde drunk fleet.

Bask in your shame!

On that note, I quite enjoy Civire kolschs and Khanid wee heavies.

Crash is one hell of a drug, let me tell you.

I normally drink gin. Beer has never been a favorite of mine but there are a few introduced to me that I find agree able.

Her Majesty's Imperial Pale Ale This was my wife's favorite drink and introduced to me during our trip to Dam-Torsad. Brewed on House Sarum's home world in the celebration of the coronation of Empress Jamyl I. The beer itself has a strong perfumery and intensely bitter flavor. According to my wife these are all things you are to expect/look for in an IPA. By no means is a staple of mine but it reminds me of wife. I plan on have a case of this brew wait for my wife when I find her.

For the Republic!!! This Minmatar red ale was introduced to me by my friend/employee Dorel Rakol (whom has been under my employment since my first mining operation). I'm not sure where this beer is brewed so I can't give you a much back story on it. The beer has a caramel malty flavor accented citrus. Dorel has a one or two of these every time we meet up and insists I join her. She insists that a meal is not a meal until one's stomach is prep'ed with of these ales.

When I was younger I use to fly with some Thukkers. They had something called "The Vagabond Special." Pretty sure it was made out of engine fluid and propane. I wouldn't recommend drinking it if you value your eye-sight.

On the plus side, it also makes a pretty effective improvised explosive.

Whiskey. Drank my first glass in a Hek joint when I was still a RMS cadet. Shore leave. Now my poison of choice after a long day in space.

Otherwise, moonshine. I learnt to distill some also during my RMS days. Used to have a still hidden away under the bunk.

I believe my favoured beer is a 'Home-brew' Special. After carefully negotiating several XL citadel sized shell casings in exchange for a few nix hounds from a very friendly (and I believe drunk) Thrukka. I've begun making (and drinking) what can only be described as home-brew ( technically I call it 'Old Drake No1').

After securing a 50/50 split of New Caldari Barley and Jita Malt inside a secure container it's then left in the exhaust trail of a drone MWD until suitably roasted.

This is then combined with my own blend of hops and yeast along with copious amounts of purified water then sealed into containers and hauled around behind my Drake for several weeks. The temperature regulated by AB and MWD bursts when required.

Three to Five weeks later and i've a potent brew, as dark as a wormhole but with taste to rival that of the finest stout within New Eden.

I do have to add that my Caldari nature permits a drop of Jita Forge Bitters at the end just to balance out the brew. After all as Veikitamo Gesakaarin said, we do like bitterness

Law Number III: There are no lazy veteran lion hunters.

Law Number VI: A hungry dog hunts best. A hungrier dog hunts even better.

Law Number XXXVIII: The early bird gets the worm. The early worm....gets eaten.

If in doubt , SHOOT !

Kresh vodka. Always chilled so that it burns and makes your teeth ache.

And yes - the Kresh makes it as bitter as a poor year end bonus.

And absolutely lethal to anyone who isn't Caldari.

I'm not a big drinker . . . there's some nice Intaki pale ales, but my vice of choice is Harroule dryweed.

I actually came across a really, really nice mead at the PIE party this weekend. I don't remember the brand, but it was one that Senior Captain Laerisse recommended. She had someone set some out in the conservatory, really, top-flight stuff. Very smooth. I think they used either pre-distillation grain ferments or maybe grape, instead of the normal barm to begin fermentation. Either way, I need to look into getting a few dozen bottles shipped out to Delve.

I am glad to enjoyed the Gala that SFRIM co-hosted with PIE and OOJ. I can ask Senior Captain Laerise if she'd be kind enough to send you some of the mead.
