So, This is a newb question but that's how you learn. CODE has entered High Sec and running amuck. It got me wondering how security status's work. Example: If i'm flying around in my Drake and find one of CODE's lackys near by and he has a -5.0 security status can I shoot him even if he didn't shoot me first? I know that if a player is flashing Red then he's shot another player in high sec and is basically open season to be shot by anyone but what if they haven't attacked anyone yet and are just Red because of bad security standing? A little help on the Crimewatch would be great.

If a player is flashing red, he is a criminal, and you may shoot him. If he is flashing yellow, he is a suspect, and you may shoot him, too, but the difference is that a suspect isn't being chased by CONCORD, so he might bite you quite painfully if it's a trap, so be careful.

If that's just a red skull, without blinking, then yes, the character is below -5.0 sec status, and he may be shot without CONCORD intervention. If you want to do it, though, a Drake is not the best choice. Highsec undesirables also have faction police on their heels if their sec status is low enough, so they always move fast. A tackler with high scan resolution and good reflexes will help you better.

yup -5.0 is open season
flashing red can also mean war which is nothing to do with gankers and immensely more dangerous.
heres some further reading on crimewatch

1. Get into space, then open the Overview settings and look. You can configure the colors yourself, but even if you don't want to do that, you can look and see what they are by default.

Red:
- war target / war enemy
- member of an enemy faction-warfare militia
- sec. status less than -5.0 / criminal
- target has a limited engagement flag with you (they shot you earlier)

Yellow:
- target is a suspect

2. Also, if you have your SAFETY button next to the circular HUD at the bottom of your screen to green, the game will not let you activate weapons on someone if it would result in Concord coming to kill you.

Keep in mind that once you activate weapons, a number of PVP flags will activate on you, which may prevent you from doing things like docking or jumping through gates. Also, anyone you attack is allowed to "defend" even if that means killing you. And finally, people can warp away if you don't apply a warp disruptor; people can go to safespots, change ships, come back in bigger ships, etc.; only initiate combat if you have the capability to keep the target from escaping (and of course to kill the target).

Expect to lose a few ships as you get used to the flags and to the PVP.

Thanks for the update and break down of aggression. Don't plan on attacking another player but it helps to understand the system better. Don't really want to loose security status because of lack of knowledge on how it works. However sometimes justice is at the end of a barrel of a gun.

You won't lose security status if you lock your safety to yellow or green - the game won't let you commit any action that will hit you with a security status reduction in highsec.
