Just a thought. As i am a fanboi of Eve and do not want to see it wither away into nothing i had a though into how you guy's could possibly get some more subscribers...

When i first found out about Eve, It was not through finding it online somewhere. It was seeing it on a shelf in a game store, I was actually looking for Civ 4 when the guy behind the counter got my attention talking about Eve and the new patch/update "Apocrypha"!
Now I would never had found out about Eve if it was not in the store on disc and ready to take away. I would have bought Civ or maybe even WOW which i was actually considering (oh the shame) instead.
I guess what I'm trying to say is... If you are looking to get the attention of all the new nerds in the world then maybe look at doing what caught my eye and what WoW still does successfully. Release the game back onto disc just like Apocrypha win the eyes of the new budding gamer and get them hooked on this incredible game!

The problem with that (although im not doubting it would bring some people into the game) is that these days there are patches frequently, there is cost assigned to make physical copies and distribute them.

And these days who goes to stores to buy pc games ? i havent done so since d3 LOD came out, ever since that iveordered them online or just download the game like eve.

I wouldn't be able to install a game that came in a physical format unless it was USB, my PC doesn't have an optical drive of any description, nor have I used one in years.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The OP idea has some merit, the question is would it be worth it to try. Since CCP did this once and then quit one suspects that the increase in subscriptions simply did not justify the expense.

Patches and updates are not the problem, they would happen when the game installed as it does with all computer games.
Setting up a new computer and even Planetside 2 and Diablo 3 to name just a few updated as soon as I ran them and that was after installing from a download done just a minute or two earlier.

I guess the game store thing depends on the area. There is at least 1 store in every major shopping mall in my area that carries computer and console games and they always have at least 8 - 10 people in them whenever I go in or walk by. The problem I see is I have no idea how many of them are regulars to the stores and how many only went in because they were already there.

We work with an advertising specialties company and this is not a problem, we can get 2gB USB drives pre-printed with information on them for as little $1.00 US if the quantity is large enough. Not sure what distribution would cost but there are ways around that as well.

There is always the gift card rack at stores near you, no not the printed birthday / anniversary cards, you know the ones that look like a credit or debit cards. These displays are in virtually every store in my area and I see them in stores everywhere I travel. An advantage to these is they are often handled by another company which may minimize the distribution hassles.

it wouldn't hurt the game if they advertised it on TV even though very little people watch it these days

Game CDs? No, thanks. CDs are a dying medium. Back then, it made sense to buy game disks because Internet traffic was expensive, and bandwidths were low. In most places, it now takes less time and effort to buy and fully download a game than to get your ass off the couch and go buy a disc that will become another piece of junk cluttering your home when you abandon the game.

What nerds yearn is shiny things in general, not discs in particular. Nice posters and artwork, models, books and stories that make you lose your grasp with reality - yes, all that "weird lore and RP stuff that no one cares about". The more attention is paid to the storyline and various details in it, the more this particular category will be attracted. The lore and PvE events now are shallow at best, and, to add insult to injury, EVElopedia with all the great articles and artwork within it has been wiped.

It wouldn't be profitable for CCP to print cd's with EVE on them.

OP, why would you buy WoW in store on physical disk?

Blizzard offers more on the online store. Digital editions have all the goodies and only online. Cosmetics for the other games the usual bait. Works too, they are nice cosmetics usually. Online just a better option really.

That and a good portion of the good stuff not seen till Bnet installed tbh.

Only variance would be the CE's, and that's for the statue and coffee table book usually. Which eve had for the 10th. This obviously Blizz's money grab for die hards with rl money as well with the frequency of release.

Then you factor in patching.....it tbh is better to download from blizzard after the game registered to you account (seemless process online). The game disk would need patching which can be extensive. You get latest version 1 shot 1 kill with online buy. better than install from physical then have bnet launcher say you need some patching badly.
