I was in the United Highsec Front, basically a scam run on ignorant hisec scrubs like my good self that allowed us to get into NPC null and terrorise with rifters the comfortable RP furries that cluttered up Great Wildlands.

UHF turned into the 99%, terrible couch surfers of TEST, then turned into Tribal Band, squashing a burnt-out Red Overlord and BR type friends out of Period Basis. About a year of farming and being terrible, then someone made a damn fool of themselves and Goonswarm steamrolled everyone into lowsec.

Absolute blast from start to finish.

When i was in BRAVE i heard comms explode with two or three grown men saying OOOHHH MY GOD DID YOU SEE THAT OHHHH MYYYYYY GHHHOOOOODDDDD and i politely asked them to switch to decaf. It was explained to me that PL had done a titan drive-by on the GE- undock and a blue archon was now sparkles.

The men yelling about it were in their first fortnight of playing EvE. They were making the same sounds i heard when UHF guys swarmed a bunch of rifters and a blackbird on a cynabal that got too cocky. Exactly the same sounds you hear on a WorldStar clip when people are letting off home-made fireworks in a suburban street.

TLDR: OP your post is, from your point of view, logical and rational. Please understand that logic and reason don't apply well to having fun. I for one look forward to Alpha players clogging up gates everywhere with wrecks.

You serious OP? The notion that joining a player-run corp. somehow gets a newbro "constrained" to Nullsec only conditions for the rest of their experience is about as short-sighted as anything I've read so far. There are so, so many corps. that run feeder corps. based in highsec that are there to encourage and support (YES, during times of war and also peacetime) the full gamut of activities that EVE can offer. They get people into Nullsec if they want to, they encourage lowsec PVP, they teach manufacturing and industry, exploration, et. et. etc.

Your advice sucks. I know plenty of two-week old characters that play just fine in nullsec and they regularly transition between highsec, lowsex, and null. I flew tonight in nullsec for that Charity Super kill with TWO new characters who were about two and three weeks old, and they had a blast. They JC'd back to highsec to take care of some business after. I don't know where you've had your nullsec experience, but it's obviously been bad for you. That sucks, I'm sorry, but I wish you'd stop replying to every post in this thread and waste your breath somewhere else m8. Any smart Alpha who understands sandbox games is gonna see right through you. Roll

This is correct, however there are far more corps that won't, and will stagnate the game for its members either through intentional exploitation or ineptitude. A newbie has no way of tracking down a good corp without trial and error, and trial and error is to costly and time consuming for most newbies.

Good for you. I know plenty of two week old characters that have never returned to the game. Just look at CCPs retention stats and you'll see that. This guy is offering an alternative insight which some newbies might find helpful.

I agree with the OP.
Made a similar experiences.

There is nothing wrong to explore the game at your own pace and join a corp later. Or never... if you feel like it.

On the other hand there is nothing wrong with joining a nullsec corp on day one... whatever floats your boat :)

Figure out what you like about eve and do it... its that simple.

5. Learn how to evade gate camps and traps as quickly as possible. Lots of YouTube, google links etc... to research. Use a shuttle where necessary and don't put your good ships at risk unnecessarily if you need to fetch a small market item a few jumps away.
6. As the old saying goes, fly what you are prepared to lose. In fact, consider whatever you are undocking as lost already. So check your ISK budget before undocking. It is the same as playing an FPS - you will die frequently and you will respawn again, except in Eve you lose a lot more.
7. Finally don't frustrate other players by asking questions that are covered by tutorials and career agents already. Besides - you will want to do the career agents for all the free ships and goodies you get via them anyway.

The rest will come naturally as you learn the game (i.e. Ship fitting, The Market, Working with the overview etc...). And you can still learn a lot through NPC corps, forums, YouTube and trial/error without relying on some muppet in a player corp to train you :P

If you don't follow my advice, well then either you're one in a thousand or you will quit the game soon after. Do not listen to the more experienced players [EDIT: If there's a chance they are not well intentioned - but otherwise everyone else here thinks this is generally bad advice so scratch that], they may still tell you to join X corp as soon as possible coz they has cookies and that this is all BS :) But you will learn ;) And they went through all this when the rules/environment was a little different so what do they know :P

Some players like to dive into the deep end immediately so if that's you then go for it. Just consider changing your situation if you no longer find it enjoyable or have joined up with the wrong corp before you decide to quit Eve. If you do happen to find a great corp early on or join up with personal friends then go with it. And if you do find a well intentioned seasoned vet then by all means take his/her advice.

2. I joined Horde the moment I finished the career agents. I will admit it took a week or so to find my footing, but I think we've gotten better there. And I wouldn't have changed a thing. You can mine the rarest ores in the game day 1, belt rat for much more money than you could ever hope to make in hisec day 2, and every new character starts with enough skill points in tackling or their racial ewar to go on fleets. A Maulus may be a cheap, low-skill frigate, but it's anything but cannon fodder. You can frustrate 2-3 enemy logi/ewar with damps, or jam them out entirely with a Griffin. I'm also not sure what you mean by 'not having a market' (I know for a fact we have a market, and I'd imagine most other nullsec alliances do too) or 'being at the mercy of higher ranking members' (are you implying they'll kill you for being new?).
3. Do you mean cruiser mastery? Or racial cruiser skill? I can assure you that the latter is not necessary, and the former can take you a year. I'd also like to say that a good idea for finding a good corp is to ask them what they do when wardecced. If the answer is "dock up for a week," find a new corp.
4. This isn't a bad idea, but be warned that this could mess up your standings with the enemy empires, which will cause them to shoot you in their hisec space even after you leave FW. Standings are a lot easier to wreck than repair.
5. I fully support this.
6. This is wise too.
7. Not this though. Most veterans are happy to answer questions to new players, and they have quite a bit of knowledge they're willing to share. EvE is a complex game, and to go in blind is generally to explode. You're welcome to find things out yourself if that's how you roll, but my advice is ask questions.

I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

Just wanted to point out that while you find the idea of mining or ratting boring, I find the idea of joining horde to be orders of magnitude more boring. Again, it comes down to preference.

If you check my corp history, I was in Eve University and I was not really that impressed with it. I wanted the WH campus but they wouldn't let me so I did go to the lowsec campus.

One time we did a frigate roam and got a Cormorant but that was about it. You were on your own and I spent only two weeks there. I did learn how to escape and do counter tactics but I learned that on my own, not from them.

I would suggest going to nullsec. That is the only place I have never lived.

However I do highly suggest you get Mumble and sit in on Eve University classes that they have. Those are good and informative classes.

My newbie advice

Don't take advice from anyone who is in an NPC corp about not joining a player corp.

Just don't.

.....

And don't believe them when they say their main is in [insert random null sec entity here] either.

And don't join Faction Warfare unless you like spending your evenings counting down backwards from 600 a lot.

And apply to my corporation Higher than Everest. You won't get in. Nope, not a hope in hell's chance. But it will bug the cr*p out of our recruitment directors and that's funny and will make me enjoy my game a lot more. If you want to try null sec (which is the most fun you can have in the game because you can do everything you can possibly do in the game all at the same time) then apply to one of them newbro thingamebobs.

Make lots of mistakes and don't listen to what anybody tells you. That's not advice about EvE. That's just what I tell myself when I'm bored at work.

Seems this player joined the wrong crowd, or did not ask for help. If you want to get someone, ask, and people will help you, also if you loose a 100 frigates in a war, maybe you will take a few of the enemy with you... if so, you will be addicted...

Eve is an open world with many possibilities in gameplay. One's playing style should match his personality. One will not have fun playing someone else's style if it doesn't fit how he think. Only the player himself know what fits him.

One thing should bear in mind is that EVE is a PVP game at all levels of gameplay - player against player, corporation against corporation, alliance against alliance, coalition against coalition. Sometimes players have their own bias or agenda. Advices from players should be taken with a grain of salt.

As a newer player Id also like to contribute some of what I went through.


  • Exploration, Exploration which will use a Frigate in my case the Magnate, this requires some skills but not many and can be done in High Sec and the first few low level wormholes relatively safely for a really nice Isk Payout, exploring will also help you learn how to avoid hostiles, sure you might lose some ships but you will learn the the isk from one or two exploration sites will more than pay for your losses.

  • Missions Run Missions until your able to run the level 3's and actually handle them without to much trouble, this will help train you in the basics of combat, its not PVP but the basics skills you will pick up running missions will be aplicable to PvP later on, things like learning where your orbit range should be set, learning about different damage types and damage mitigation options.

  • Mine Seriously do some mining, when your low on Isk its one of the quickest safest ways to get some money in the bank to buy your next ship, its not as rewarding as Exploration or Mission running but its a hell of a lot safer, just don't do it in a hub system.

    • Once you can do the missions at level 3 and you have done some exploration and felt what its like to be in lawless space then you are ready for Null and a corporation, your next decision is picking just how you want to enter null.

I've been playing for over 10 years. The best thing I did was join a pirate noob/training corp 3 months in. If I had it to do again I would have joined 2 weeks in. There's no faster way to learn the game than to join a group that knows what they are doing and are willing to teach you. I've heard a lot of good things about Eve University and Red vs Blue. I would advise any new player to check those out as soon as you've done some of the basic tutorials.

you're just not playing long enough to be giving advice. +1 for effort but wrong in so many ways.

As a 7+ year veteran, my biggest regret is not having joined a larger active corp that does many things, including PvP, early in my EvE career.

Note that I consider myself an industrialist first, but that doesn't preclude PvP participation in my mind, i.e. I won't start a fight, but I will help in any way I can to end them.

I heartily recommend joining one of the larger PvP corps, if only for a short time, so you can at least discover for yourself what you enjoy doing. Keep in mind there are a lot of corps in EvE, including a lot of bad corps, and there is no requirement that you stay in a bad corp.

Sticking to a npc corp and play "solo" for weeks is probably the worst a new player can do. Even if the only thing you can do is fly a t1 frig/ venture, it's gonna be 100x as much fun in a player corp.

HS wars are not wars in the first place and losing a t1 frig on jita undock does not hurt as much as losing a 4b Iteron or a 45b officer fit idiot "endgame" Caldari Navy Raven later in the game. Better learn early.
