So I have a trading alt. Seems to be doing well. Making quit a few million ISK a day. I know I could be doing better but I'm still learning the ins and out of market play. Anywho, I was thinking of trying inter-regional trading. It seems like it's gonna take a while to get the skills and isk up for a freighter. I also hear there is lots of risk is involved even in high sec with transporting goods. I know there's tools online to help reduce this but like just about everything in EVE there's no guarantee. For anyone who's done it, is it worth the time/isk investment? If so, please throw me some tips or references you think would help a rookie get started.

Is this alt on the same account as your main or a separate one?

Well the trade one is on my main. But I'm honestly thinking of making a second account to take advantage of the recruiting bonus.

A few months ago CCP significantly increased the brokerage fees and taxes applied to market transactions. High volume, low margin trades are rarely worthwhile.

Low volume, high margin trades still work but you may be better off training transports rather than a freighter. A Deep Space Transport carries 60K M3 and can use the MWD/Cloak procedure to travel through highsec quickly and very safely. A blockade runner has less cargo but they are very fast and can fit a covert cloak. It's really only vulnerable on the dock and that risk can be mitigated using insta dock/undock bookmarks at high risk stations like Jita.

Transports are a faster train - you need racial industrial 5, and much less expensive to buy than freighters. They're also less painful to lose. It really doesn't matter which you choose. I fly Gallente and Minmater and am happy with both.

Cool, you need a scout on that second one.
Knowing what's on the other side of the gate you're about to warp to before you warp to it will see your survivability go up several orders of magnitude.

Is there a 30 man gank fleet?
What about those wardeckers , are they waiting for your juicy mission boat with a gang of murder boats?
Thinking of going to lowsec, is the gate hell camped?
Wondering if there's a bump macharial waiting for your freighter?

With a scout these things will be considerably less likely to catch you.

Bonus points for not having it in the same Corp as your main and not naming it similarly to your main.
(If I can tell you have a scout I can work around it and get you anywayBlink)

Imo best bang for your buck on this type of alt is blitz training for an astero, cloaks , scans and is fast.
About a week s worth of training and you can have a cloaky eyes.

This is all very helpful info. I think I'll go for the transport route first since it seems like a safer bet. If I feel comfortable down the road I'll see about jumping into a freighter investment. I really appreciate the tips!

Just don't give it a similar name to your main, you may be kicking yourself for it in years to come.
Trust me.

If you are getting into inter-region trading, you should strongly consider contracting. First, Rita Jita one of the richest traders uses contracts, so don't assume this is some kind of entry level thing or something "real" traders don't use. (Actually, a lot of station-traders think "real traders" only trade in station) Contracts eliminate almost all of your risk related to loss of goods. They do cut into your profits, but with a good enough profit margin, the loss is acceptable.

Personally, I'll just fly around in a shuttle, inty, covops, or (my favorite) a leopard.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

This, I keep inter-region trading to stuff fitting in my trusty travel ceptor (btw, recently switched from Taranis to Ares because of smartbomb survivability). No alts needed.

I'm my own NPC alt.
