Afterburner or microwarpdrive for low sec Maller?

I'm fitting up a Maller for a little low sec ratting and opportunistic pvp. It seems like almost all cruisers are fit with mwds, even when they have a scram.

Now, I understand this for kiting ships, and also for very short range brawling fits; kiting ships need to maintain range to stay safe, and short range brawlers need to close the distance or die.

However, the Maller seems to fall between these two camps. It can happily project damage out to 24km, so even if it cannot catch a kiting ship, it can still drive it off. But it has the worst tracking of all the brawlers (as well as the lowest base speed), so it really needs to be able to maintain distance within scram range.

Does this make the afterburner a better choice with for the Maller? Or does it need an mwd like virtually all cruiser+ hulls?

In case of the Maller it is very situational at best. An afterburner can help but on the other hand you only have 3 med slots to work with so you have to vary your options.

If you go with an afterburner, make sure you have a web on and if you go with an mwd you should have a cap booster on because the Maller and the bigger Abbadon are to worst laserships in EVE.

If you like kiting, I would fly an Omen instead.

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!

I had been planning on flying the Maller as a brawler with a web because, as you say, the Omen is the better kiter. If equipping an mwd, it would simply be for the purpose of getting close enough to scram/web the target.

The trouble is, a 1600mm Maller feels slow enough and clumsy enough that even with an mwd I'm not sure I'll catch anything that doesn't land in web range.

An afterburner, on the otherhand, might let me control the distance when brawling with more dangerous cruisers like the Moa that can nearly match my tank but massively out dps me at close range. Th Maller has such a bad reputation, it seems like a lot of fights will come to me.

I'm leaning towards the afterburner, but I see so few afterburner cruiser fits that I wanted to make sure that there was not something obvious that I was missing.

You're going to be a total brick, AB won't get you anywhere.

I would actually just do double web and no prop and hope they're dumb enough to get that close :D
