Effective hitpoints.
Your ship has raw hitpoints (shield, armor, hull) and to each of those apply resists. Raw hitpoints multiplied with damage reduction by resists gives us effective hitpoints.
In EVE, the damage taken for the EHP calculation is always the lowest resist you have. In tools like EFT and PyFa you can customize that and for example only take thermal damage into account and the tool will tell you your EHP against that thermal damage.

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

not sure how it's calculated in-game (I thought I used your lowest resist, but whatever). What I was going to add:

These resistances should obviously be observed in space-- adaptive invulnerability fields, armour hardeners and the like only work when active. When you undock and you activate such a hardener, you'll see the resist go up and your EHP will adjust accordingly.

Basically it's how much damage one needs to output before you die.

Yeah I was always under the impression the ingame fitting tool used your lowest resistance.

As explained, EHP = actual hitpoints * resistance to damage. The number you get can be used as an overall indicator of how defended your ship is.

The number doesn't reflect speed or signature (size) tanking, so frigates, which rely on being too fast and too small to be hit by the bigger guns, will have a small EHP but still be able to survive in situations where the math says they should die in one shot. They will die in 1 shot if they stop to 0 speed and activate a MWD (increases their radar signature), but you learn not to do that.

I would recommend you only use the EHP as a guideline, and not as a guarantee of survival. In theory if you have 40,000 EHP and the enemy does 800 DPS, you'll die in 50 seconds, but in practice he may choose a different ammo to do more damage to your weakest resist, he may neutralize your capacitor forcing your defenses to turn off, and he may call in friends who will take about 3 seconds to get to you. So it's not a guarantee of survival.

Just checked in-game and you guys are right. It's the lowest resist that's taken, whereas the default in tools (at least pyfa) is equal omni-damage. I edited my post to reflect that ;)

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

It's easier to understand when you look at it from another persons perspective.
It's when I want to shoot you and blow you up.

If your ship has 1000 points of hp
and I do 100 points of EM damage
I need to shoot you 10 times for pretty explosions

if you have 50% EM resistance
I now need to shoot you 20 times for pretty explosions
for me your effective hp is 2000
for you it doesn't change, it's still 1000

What often confuses people is when they look at a killmail (typically their own lossmail) and see that the damage they took is a lot less than their EHP. However, it should be noted that the damage listed in a killmail is only the damage that got through and doesn't include the damage that was resisted or missed altogether.

A Guardian for example will have an EHP of greater than 100K, but the lossmail will show it only took say 16K damage, assuming it received no reps.

There you go (without links and heat it sits at 101k)

If you plug in some implants, it gets slightly ridiculous.

EDIT: or a more standard fit
