Current best solution for invention?

I'm trying to get caught up on EVE after several years of down time. Previously, I had a couple towers in a WH and did invention there as it was the best solution for me at the time.

I'm curious what is the best option now days? Are towers still the best option or what is going on with these citadels? Are citadels taking the place of towers is that what I should be looking into?

It depends on your needs and the options offered by your corp/alliance. But i think most people would say, just invent in stations. Ever since the Phoebe expansion two years ago, there is no queue in station, just a system cost index. And invention is pretty cheap in that regard.

Keep in mind, we'll have industrial arrays very soon, and those will change the deal a lot. Probably.

The above message presents my opinions on the topic at hand. If there is a conflict between my views and reality, consider reality to be correct until proven otherwise.

CCP's plan is to eventually remove POS's/towers from the game. Citadels are the intended replacement and come in 3 sizes.

Here's a dev blog which gives an overview of citadels and CCP's plans. It also contains links to earlier dev blogs about citadels.

Right now citadels do not have all the capabilities that a POS can have. There is no manufacturing in a citadel yet, but that should be coming in the next main update. There is also no invention in citadels yet, and at the moment there is no confirmed date on when citadels will get invention capabilities.

If you have all the capabilities you need in your POS right now, for the time being you should probably stick with the POS until citadels have all the capabilities you want.

The new structures are the intended replacement, the first of those new structures is the Citadel and it is not going to be the manufacturing structure.

There's a second new structure, coming in November, the Industrial Array. That is the manufacturing/invention structure. More structures are planned for later, including drilling platforms and observation stations (no info on either)

This. While you will probably be able to install a manufacturing service module in a citadel, it wouldn't be bonused.

Invention costs are cheap (the actual fees), so no reason to go with a POS imo, just keep it in NPC station.

I'm my own NPC alt.

A small POS with a design lab will give you a 50% time efficiency bonus for invention and a 40% bonus for copying. Cost for tower and lab is roughly 200 million and since Crius you can anchor just about anywhere - a few restricted systems. Just need a free moon. - lots of them available. Deployment is fast - 15 minutes to anchor a small tower. CCP will eventually remove these from the game but probably not until feature parity is achieved with new structures.

We are still waiting for the devblog for engineering complexes but, assuming they follow the pattern of Citadels, there won't be a small one. Probably a billion ISK investment for a medium that a small corp can't defend or deny content by taking it down.
