Processing Ice. Is it a good idea?

Hello folks, I’ve been looking at reprocessing ice (Glacial mass) however when examining the market price for what it will reprocess into it appears that refining it actually makes it substantially less valuable.

I don’t currently have the Ice Processing Skill but I do have Refining and Refinery efficiency to level 5 and I’m using a NPC station refiner where my standing is high enough for them not to want a cut.

Does anyone know if it’s worth training up in the ICE Processing skill? It doesn’t seem to make sense that the unprocessed ice would be more valuable unless it has a use that I’m unaware of.

Thanks for any advice.

I almost always process ice for my pos after buying the ice off the market. I have ice processing 1 and use a station that I have no tax. It's a pretty noticable difference in price usually. But if the numbers don't work out...not really a debate.

Make sure your numbers are calc'd right...I get a pretty decent little bump in value when reprocessing. It also only takes level 1 or 2 (or something like that depending on your other refining skills) in ice processing to get no waste. I do use a freighter to haul the ice to a high standing station so I pay no fee...to lazy to grind standing locally :).

Thanks to both of you. I am wondering if I’m just getting my maths wrong. For the few days training it’ll take (I’m not far off what I need) I might just train up Ice Processing and reprocess a load to see what happens.

I don't know the size of reprocessed materials but you could take into consideration the size of the reprocessed materials if you are quite far from where you sell it (assuming you sell it) or retrieve it from to reprocess (assuming you buy it) on each freight

I'm fairly sure that processing ice at 100% efficiency is profitable but the margins are very thin. Isotopes alone are worth less than the ice is but once you add Liquid Ozone, Heavy Water and Strontium into the calculations, you make a (very small) margin on some ices, when purchased at the systems where people mine them. I'm fairly sure Gallente ice is still "broken" due to Goons ice interdiction (it is still at a highly elevated price and amounts mined are way lower than they were before)

Jita prices of unprocessed ice are often more than the value of the output (or the difference is insignificant). Hauling unprocessed ice is not recommended as it is very bulky (1000m3 per unit, Freighter strongly recommended) - hence only place you find any at a reasonable price is in a highsec system that has ice belts.

Note that with grismar, you'll have to plug in your own assumptions for isotope prices.

HW 115
LOz: 450
Stront - 450
Helium - 490
Hydrogen - 625
Nitrogen - 500
Oxygen - 1050

White Glaze (Caldari/Nitrogen) - 167k/u
Glacial Mass (Minny/Hydro) - 205k/u
Clear Icicle (Amarr/Helium) - 164k/u
Blue Ice (Gallente/Oxygen) - 332k/u

And those numbers match up pretty close with the "Price" column numbers on Cerlestes's site.

I have a very basic sheet for ice mining calculations and it tells me that refining Glacial Mass is more profitable than selling ice blocks. Prices are lowest sell in Rens, taken from eve-central.

Also, EMK now has regional prices on its group summary pages:

Which will give you an idea of what ice is selling for across the empires. (You can customize which regions appear if you create an account.)

Just contract it to me in Abudban for 165,000 ISK per block and I'll take care of all your reprocessing for you.Cool
