I have always wondered why I have never seen an ad for EVE on the Syfy network. I was watching Dark Matter and killjoys the other day and I'm thinking "man, this would be the PERFECT place for an EVE commercial". It stands to reason that maybe people that like to watch space shows might like to play a space game.

I don't know who runs media strategy at CCP, but they don't seem to be on top of things.

Edit, i noticed that the name of Episode 10 of Killjoys is " How to kill friends and influence people" lol. Just try to tell me that don't sound like EVE Big smile
Yeah I agree, CCP should definitely have commercial spots during those and other Sci-Fi space oriented shows.

I first heard about Eve Online in mid 2007 from other players in another space oriented MMORPG. Their descriptions of Eve Online was very negative, so much to the point that I said I would never sub with Eve and just plain didn't even think about Eve after that.

About 6 months after I stopped playing that game, mid 2008, I was watching Battlestar Galactica on Sy-Fy channel and saw this TV commercial. At first I thought it was part of the TV series until I saw the Eve Online logo at the end. After doing a goggle search and spending a couple weeks viewing various Eve Online info guides and videos, I subbed to the game and have been with Eve ever since.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who subbed to Eve because of that TV commercial.

Targeted advertising -same reason you are getting all those ads for furry...items and other...exotic interests.

Well, Mis-Targeted advertising really.

The ads are being served up to those who already know about EVE. Which is sort of completely redundant and a waste of advertising budget.

Arnt you paying only when someone clicks the ad?

I'm not sure to be honest. I think google ads have a click-through component as well as a fixed price thingy. i could be woefully wrong on this.

In any event, it doesn't actually matter for teh purposes of promoting EVE to a wider audience. The point I'm making is I saw very few, if any, ads for EVE before I started playing it.

I got suckered in after reading BBC reports on B-R5RB shenanigans.

If anything, I think its Google fault for not knowing that you want to play EVE before even you know it. That is how it works I am afraid.

Crappy algos: Seems like every thing I search for results in an online ad trying to sell me the same item, including Eve. But when I spent some time searching for "Big Red Panties" there were no resulting online efforts to sell me big red panties.

Crappy algos.

It's part of the evolution of the internet. Outside of online retail, the only thing that the internet "produces" is ad space. A lot of ad space. So much ad space, that no human could actually manage it. So, it's left up algorithms. Except, basically no one clicks on internet ads, so the very few people who do have the power to wildly break the algorithm for everyone else. So, the people who program the algorithms resort to the very safest application: just advertise whatever they can find in your local storage (cookies). It's completely stupid and a total waste of money. It also explains how every webpage is slowing turning into a mid-naughties Yahoo-frontpage looking mess.

Actual, human-designed advertising can work really, really well. Going out into meatspace and talking about your product is still the surest way to get sales. If you're giving money to AdSpace or whatever, stop, right now. The only thing those are good for is scamming your own ads for click-thru money.

I'm always running an adblocker, but I can't remember ever seeing any EvE ads until I had already downloaded the trial.

Browsing the internet without an adblocker? That is like AFK mining in highsec and complaining that your ship gets blown up. No doubt there is a great overlap in these populations.

this is soo wrong...people do click on internet adverts, internet marketing shows great results for people who use it, sure going out and speaking to a hundred people over a whole day is much better than throwing adverts at 100k people who may actually have an interest in your product?

"The only thing those are good for is scamming your own ads for click-thru money" - this is wrong, google remove these clicks.

Back in 2005 it was a flash animated banner that got me to click the link.

The problem here is that I didn't actually see any internet ads for EVE until after I'd already started playing. As a player, I've become deluged with ads for EVE.

Advertising to those who don't play EVE would probably be much more beneficial.

I acually laugh as this type of commercials cause I go to a website and decide to buy something and THEN the commercials start showing up on all the pages i visit. which means advertisers are paying to advertise me about a product i already bought.

How about you try visiting something you want, and waiting for ad's. See if it's a new way to
deal shop.

I cannot stop seeing the ads everywhere, which isn't a problem but I am not the target demographic I guess. It does remind me to log in I guess?

I also play WoW so I think my searches for WoW trigger the ads ;)
