I've got around 8mil sps, all in combat and am most proficient in a Drake. With exploration, which I have never done any of at all, what kind of ship am I looking for, just for Highsec.

Is it viable to just slap the appropriate mods on a Drake, or do I need to specialize, remembering I'm really just going for a look at the moment to see if I enjoy it?

The drake will do, but you're going to need the basic skillset. That would be astrometric 3 along with the support skills rangefinding and acquisition. (pinpointing requires astrometric 4). Specialization is only required when wormholes or 0.0 space is involved.

That should do it :)
But it might get some time getting used to how to use the probes.

just few ideas how to start exploration venture

Also, if you are good with drake, Tengu is what you need and should train and use

For actual scanning, a Heron is a good starter ship for Caldari... Then move on to a Buzzard when you get the skills.
Drake should be fine for the actual sites, but as above said, Tengu is better.

A blaster harpy works pretty well too. I was toying with one of those on my alt last night. 200 dps, AB, web, MSE, utility mid and core probe launcher. What else do you want? High sec sites are only going to have frigs, maybe the occasional cruiser. So it's more than sufficient. Obviously you should keep a salvager in your cargo for running the salvaging sites, can swap out the probe launcher for it as needed. Tengu maybe better, but at 8M SP I suspect the blarpy is a whole lot quicker to get into. It's a safe bet you can already fly it in fact.

Fireworks and snowballs are great, but what I really want is a corpse launcher.

If you want to "toying" it may be quiet fun to see how you run Guristas Vigil for example (Blood Vigil is even tougher). :-)

But to be serious, you suggest blaster ship for the person who certainly has his his missiles skills trained, not gunnery.

Drake is just fine as exploration platform if you can live with the fact that it has no scanning bonuses.
I used Drake a lot before I got my first Tengu.
T2 scan rig, Sister's gear, PPH-2 Implant and you will be OK with scanning and running any combat sites in hi sec.

Bear in mind there are many High Sec sites that you will NEVER scan down until your Exploration Skills are at 4, and are in a T2 Covert Ops (Buzzard), or another ship with Scan Probe bonuses.

You can run Guristas: Hideout, GSo, Watch and Vigil in drake + Radars
For 3/10 Caracal Navy Issue or Gila

And I fly Tengu ofc so I am well set for everything I am not bothered with Lookout anyway

Once he gets Tengu he will be just fine from at any corner, no point to waist the time training blasters

Any T1 cruiser that can deal with frigs can do a 3/10.

This is a complete lie.

I can scan down to 100% all the sites in high-sec with Astrometrics I and no other skills in a T1 Scanning Frig or T3. Obviously having support scanning skills makes it quicker though.

This is bull.. I started doing exploration in a mission drake and even with purger rigs and a core probe launcher I was able to scan everything down using 5 probes.

You may want to look at a gila, I used 1 after my drake and is a great little ship for exploration. There are some HS sites that will not let anything bigger than a cruiser in. I used to get by with light and medium T2 drones and t1 sentry's. I use a tengu now, which is perfect for exploration.

Only real problem can be Vigils and some of lowest strength radars, mags and gravs. You can get all lowsec ranked DEDs with crappy skills as well.

Ranch dressing. Dip the pizza in it.

That feeling you get when you try it, is the exact opposite feeling you will get when you scan down your first DED site and get meta 1 drops. And the second, third, fourth, and fifth times. It will be an excruciating journey to see anything shiny, let alone a signature that isn't a wormhole.

And don't ***** about not getting ****.

I'm always amazed about the advices some old time players give.

8 Mil SP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Gila---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Tengu.

To the OP.

The Drake will be your powerhouse for quite sometime. Focus on that and exploration Heron will do to start with, Buzzard is the first T2 ship you'll want to have.

When you earn some money, and it's little to start with, you can buy a Hookbill for smaller complexes.

You'll want to stay away from Wormholes untill you've got a Buzzard.

When earning more you could go for a transport ships, get a Crane and seek out a dead end low sec area. and start exploring there

Sneak your Drake in just after downtime, or scout the route with the buzzard, and set way points.

then when you start earning beter and beter and maxed out your Drake skills go for the Tengu (Most drake skills aply to the Tengu as well)

So you suggest getting a buzzard to scan, and hookbill to shoot, and then back in the buzzrad to open cans and salvage? yes, some people do it. By the time you get there the site will be run by someone else..

Clearly you don't have much HS exploration experience.. we give advice based on experience... As said, some sites will not allow anything bigger than a cruiser hull in and the quickest most effective ship to get in to is a Gila, and with relatively low skills it is very useful, you can even run lvl 4's in them. Yes they are not cheap for a new player... I have used a hookbill and many other ships so can confidently say that for a new player who wants to do HS exploration, a Gila is a worth looking at.. and a buzzard is not going to add any values to a new player in HS Exploration.

Not realy, I was talking about general exploration, HS is but 1 and from the O.P.'s questions I considered the hookbill for lower combat sites, A caracal will do fine as well for those sites.

You are right ofcourse that the Gila is a good shipfor the job, but you're not considering the time it will cost an 8 milion SP player to get the proper skills and money to buy and fit one, let alone being able to aford loosing it.

Locking down before entering will bring the risk of others running down the site before you, but it lowers the risk of lossing your assets which is importand when starting out.

The Buzzard is usefull when you start scanning out WH and when you solo those you better scan them out and come back after you scanned them out, before the time you have acces to ships like a Tengu. Better to miss a site to the competitiion then loose your ship. These things become obsolite when you are father on ion the game, though with 8 miljion SP you don't make large sums of money yet.

And A drake does pretty well in lvl 4 missions as well
