When combat probing, when is the ship's location set?

So, let's say that I'm doing some combat probing. A dirty little sneak hiding out in a hole in the wall. The problem is, they're in a fast-moving ship and using an ovesized prop. So, I start to combat probe them. What point in the combat probe cycle is the location of the target ship set?

Is it the beginning, when I first hit the scan button (meaning, with an 8-second scan and a 4 second warp, a target moving 5km a second is going to be 60 km away), or when the scan finishes (meaning the target would only be 20km away on a 4 second warp)?

Good question. You could test it by probing something on grid pre-aligned.

it sets it at the end of the scan

Just to enhance this with practical experience:

If it didn't set at the end of the scan, headshotting targets (putting probes where you think someone will land) would be impossible

But your warp may not be exactly 4 seconds, given align time and all that, and also, if you're trying to be THAT precise, you have to take into account server ticks, and the fact that internet lag will delay when the server sees your warp-to command, and this delay may give the target additional kilometers of distance.

EDIT: and also additional kilometers for the time you waste after you arrive, waiting for the server to align your ship to where the target is, activate your MWD, get you up to speed, etc.

It was just an example scenario, not necessarily using exact details. They probably could have been left out, but I wanted to provide a small example just in case my question wasn't completely clear.

This, from experience.

Agreed, when i scan ships that are just leaving station to get their unique code, i only get the code if the ship is still inside probe borders when the scanning status bar reaches the end. I have started scan while ship still on grid with me, and have shown nothing on scan because ship has warped out of range by the time my scan is complete.

A little calrification.

The position of the ship you are scanning may be and often is changing as they move around a system and your probes have no affect on this.

The position of the ship you see reported in your scan results is fixed at the end of the current cycle of your scan probes.
