Would you like to bring back color icons in the NEOCOM?

Our primary goal was to make the icons recognizable once you had learned what they represent, it is an impossible task to make abstract icons unique from each other but still perfectly represent what they stand for when you see them for the first time. The most important thing is that it will become easy to memorize after a certain time, but we know it takes time and we understand the frustration of having to do that after having had them unchanged for so long.

Our studies show however that those who are coming in as new players are remembering these icons much quicker than before and one of the core reasons for it is because the icons don't use specific colors. Then we don't store information about colors to remember icons but rather focus on their shapes.

I'm puzzled by results of their studies...

We all use color signals in RL:
- red - for danger/do not enter/etc
- yellow - warning/pay attention
- green - go freely.
As result if you see red colored sign you don't need to understand text or picture. You just know that you better be somewhere else.

We don't need to have such signs in special places and have unique shape to read the information.

But this dev said that we should have signals based on shape like:
- triangle - stop/danger
- square - warning
- circle - go freely?

What?

Christ, would you people stop living in the past. I'm sure you are the same type of people who are still on Windows XP because change makes them uncomfortable...

Yeah it seems to be completely backwards and defies any logic.

The very ******* fact that colours are recognized faster and easier than symbols should turn this whole study around. What it could be is that they are correct, but are ignoring everything around it. They don't give information about how they tested it, but when they say it was about new players only, then the new players obviously remembered the shapes first, because they take more effort for the brain to work on.

Still, for fast identification out of a blob of symbols colours are vastly superior. I don't think they actually considered that. They only concentrated on "what's faster for them to remember them" and then ignored everything else. The result would be that it actually takes people now longer to find the correct symbol for what they want, even though they're being remembered faster.

Which means that CCP didn't quite realize that there is a difference between learning them and actually using them quickly in the game. With SHAPES, one always has to look more thorough, while with COLOURS, a quick glance is sufficient!

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

I'm with Windows 10 on my PC, and with iOs 10 on my iPhone CE.

These were improvements. Unlike of Neocom and icon set of Eve Online client.

I remember using these icons for years and absolutely loved them because it was super quick to find everything.
Reference for you newer players: http://i.imgur.com/pBd0j8v.jpg

Then when CCP suddenly made sweeping changes, I was a bit turned off like I was with the undocking button change. But after a while and many phantom misclicks to the old spot, I got used to the undocking button's new location and I'm perfectly okay with it now.

So being the good sport I am, I figured I'd get used to these new icons pretty quickly and all would be good and I'd never notice the change. However, it's been years since these changes were made and I still find myself misclicking way to often. These "new" and "updated" UIs are not good. They're not quick and easy to distinguish because of their tiny images that are all very similar and they're all the same color.

Of course there will be people who like the new icons, but honestly they're not effective. Which is what the UI should all be about; something that is clean, easy to use, and quick to use. I would have loved to see an update on the icons, but with each one keeping it's flare and colorful appearence. The fact that after a couple years of using them, I still cannot get used to them should say something about the design implementation.

Yes

Don't like the current look at all. I miss the old icons.
