Its so close, yet so far. Sad
You could potentially live there. Shocked
I am so excited!

Lets make a nuclear powered colony ship on the orbit and send it there, with embrios, robots and aparature to grow humans and plants when it will land there.

An A.R.C. ship. Advanced Resettlement Carrier. Lol

I'd be the first to offer my genetics to the project, since the originals won't survive the trip I suspect.

Ugh

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

Whole planet full of Taishoku Mayaki descendants. Shocked

I wonder what will be the unofficial name for that planet since its rather unusual situation.

Sega? Like in "Space exploration great again?" Lol

So it would be a planet full of midget sized hedgehogs running around at superSONIC speeds?

Maybe? We dont know what kind of fantastic creatures may live there already.
But Taishoku Mayakis will make it ours. Cool

That's impressive... reminds me of old Solstice.
I mean the pic, not the pig. lol

There is a set of eyes, combined with the second to last colour ...
... that makes them appear shiningly bright.

Would fit well...

Interesting article. Definitely food for thought.

So if we can get a probe to travel close to the speed of light it'll take a few decades to get there?

Anything could happen within a few decades..

20 years for a laser powered kite with a minuscule, post stamp sized probe and a lot of sail area.

That build is established for completion in 20 years or so, so the amount of time to wait is around 40~50 years.

But if we will make some groundbreaking achievement in physics and use it for space travel, who knows, maybe minutes to fly there and back?

I just realized that I have ship (Orca) named Centaurus for a few years already, just like the constellation in which Proxima Centauri is located. Big smile
It was a reference to a "Black Hole" film ship that had to be named that way initially, but was named differently in the film.

In fact there is a lot of references everywhere to Alpha Centauri: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Centauri_in_fiction
Elite 2 had a planet there called Eden with flowing water and outpost.

I was thinking of the slightly more obvious Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which is a gem.

Yes, a lot of these game creators consider it the best first trip option to the stars. Being the closest to our solar system was a gift from heaven to all writers and game creators, but now with having terestial planet its like a gift from heaven for space exploration future. \o/
It can define all project from now on. I imagine everyone's revieving them will from now on say "To hell with Mars. We already know what it looks like. Show me your project for Proxima Centauri travel capable spaceship."

Of course we need to be sure, as one planet was mistakenly "discovered" some time ago in Alfa Centauri solar system. But now the data for discovery is more believable than last time.

On subject of Sid Meier's... somehow Civ5 is far more popular than Civ4. And even higher rated on some sites. Shocked

The US government just needs to reveal their interstellar space ships they have had since the 60's and we could be on that planet in mere minutes. [/black helicopters]

I've sent a wind-powered spaceship design to the government.

Still didn't get their answer, even though I sent it months ago.
