Hey guys what do people get when they thank your ship in high sec ? How's long does their security status take a hit? What are the flagging mechanics for this? Do they stay red and eventually become pirates or over times does the status go back up? Thanks

If you shoot another player in highsec without having agression rights(war, suspect or limmited engagement)
you will become flagged as criminal.
Upon flagging concord (magic space police) will blow your ship up and any others you undock in for the duration of the flag
Criminal flag lasts 15 minets
Concord cannot be avoided, ship loss cannot be avoided.
Concord response times vary dependant on the security level of the system you are in.
Concord is there to punish, not to protect.

Sec status drops per act of unlawfull agression,
Sec status of -5 or below will result in becoming open game for capsuleers in highsec
-Sec status can be fixed with security tags or grinding + sec status has to be ground back.

In addition to the above...

Here is an earlier thread on the subject.
For context:
- the original poster was suicide ganked while mining.
- he wanted to know what exactly happened and how to prevent it in the future.

As Ralph indicated, the immediate punishment is criminal flag (other people can shoot the criminal for 15 minutes), Concord blowing up the criminal ship within 10-30 seconds or so, and a small but permanent loss of sec. status. Note that Concord doesn't blow up the criminal's pod, but any nearby player can shoot a criminal pod (the 15 minute timer remains after Concord is done with their punishment).

So anyway, once they accumulate enough negative sec. penalties to reach -5.0, then they become permanently free-for-all and anyone can shoot their ship. Of course, you shouldn't shoot a criminal's ship unless you are SURE you can kill it, because once you shoot they can "defend themselves" and shoot back.

Negative sec. status can be fixed by killing NPC pirates; it's easiest in null 0.0 space where the NPC pirates have high bounties, but it's possible to be done by grinding level 4 missions, too. You see some people with +5.0 sec. status, they got it from missions or ratting.

Most pirates are either proud of their -10.0 (maxed out bad-ass), or can't stand doing PVE so they don't bother with "fixing" it, and they just use a neutral alt to go shopping for replacement ships if they need any.

Also be aware that CCP has declared that if you create a character, use it for piracy until it goes to -10.0, then delete that character to start again at "neutral", that's abuse and you can be banned.
