Such a structure should be founded on competent bedrock. The locations of the test borings can be used for the larger borings necessary for the caissons.

Even if it's a pyramidal structure, you don't want variable settlement, especially, and any settlement at all can disturb the esthetic where the building meets the surrounding gardens, etc.

Arcologies are entire cities built into one massive structure. They are self-contained. This includes carrying their own gardens. However, building something of that mass requires the bedrock structural integrity to be solid. The kind of minerals contained therein is also important. We don't want to build the structure on a layer of clay instead of a layer of granite after all.

A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

Having worked with geotechnical drilling rigs and having studied some of Paolo Soleri's ideas and designs, I'm familiar with ground-based arcologies ... as well as the citadels we now build in space.

Those principles have been further iterated to produce ideas such as:

It seems we're drawing on the same sources. Our design has more of the center filled - lighter and stronger building materials has allowed that evolution - but in terms of sillhouette it seems quite similar.

For the first time since I started the conversation, he looks me dead in the eye. In his gaze are steel jackhammers, quiet vengeance, a hundred thousand orbital bombs frozen in still life.

I'd love to hear of anything I could be helpful in doing. Drop me a mail with what I can do.

Pardon my ignorance in this matter, but isn't it a given for arcologies to be pyramidical in structure due to the geometrical structure being more able to withstand the stresses of environmental abuse and being more stable than other alternatives?

Also, what economic activities will the Yanala Arcology support?

I believe it's common for the larger Arcologies. An Arcology is generally any shape that is wider than it is tall, however. This only applies within a planet's gravity, of course - Orbital Arcologies can be any shape!

As for the precise economic activities, I'm not sure. We're making sure to provide abundant industrial, retail and administrative spaces so that the guiding hand of the marketplace can help determine what companys move in.

By 'orbital arcologies' you meant 'space stations ', I take it.

I would consider an orbital arcology to be any orbital station where the principal purpose is the accommodation of a large civilian population, and not where said population is in service of other goals (shipyards, industrial processing, trade etc).

Per definition, all orbital arcologies are space stations, but not all space stations are orbital arcologies.

Not quite sure how children's stories got onto this thread, but can we try and keep the conversation a little more directed? Thanks.

I believe it is. I really hope it is, otherwise I've got some explaining to do!

Press Release : Tuulinen Foundation / Progress of Project Fresh Start #1
Location: Pokitaro City / Abagawa IV / The Forge / Caldari State

Broadcast Follows:

The Tuulinen foundation is proud to announce that the Sub-Frame of the main Arcology structure is now complete. Many thanks to all of those who helped bring pressure to bear on the local authorities for their help in securing and identifying the right building spot.

With the Subframe ready to carry the main engineering trunks work has commenced on hollowing out the basements and sub-basements to house the engineering guts of the Arcology's environmental systems. The schedule allows for another two weeks to complete digging the space and a third week to properly build the structures that will form the floors, ceilings and walls of those spaces. During this period the parts that form up the two main Gravitonic Reactors will be placed at their construction sites before those spaces are roofed over.

When the first reactor goes online, the dependence of the Yanala Arcology on outside power will be over - and with power self-sufficiency the heavy construction on the water and air systems can commence!

Any questions or comments from within the Capsuleer Community can be aired here, or directed to Foundation Chairman Pieter Tuulinen.

Press Release : Tuulinen Foundation / Progress of Project Fresh Start #3
Location: Pokitaro City / Abagawa IV / The Forge / Caldari State

Broadcast Follows:

Today the great heart of the Visera Yanala Arcology beat for the first time!

The twin Gravitonic reactors, which have been under construction in the sub-surface infrastructure hub of the Arcology, have been coming closer to independent operation during this last month, but at 0340 hours Cluster Time, the team controlling Reactor #2 achieved a stable and sustaining reaction. Reactor #2 has now ceased to draw power from the local grid to maintain it's operations and has been producing energy at it's rated output.

Reactor #1 went operational 23 minutes later at 0403 Cluster Time.

The reactors will now sell energy to local domestic and industrial providers through their connections to the local grid to help defray operational costs for Project Fresh Start. The next major milestone for the project is completing the water purification and recycling system, waste recycling and establishment of the ground station communications hub - which will mark completion of the Arcology's infrastructure hub.

Any questions or comments from within the Capsuleer Community can be aired here, or directed to Foundation Chairman Pieter Tuulinen.
