What rats do you usually find in Minmatar space?I wanted to do some ratting in that area when I get my Navy Vexor trained up.
Are the ratting areas better for payouts in different space?

The lower sec. you go, the better the rats are, so high-sec to low-sec to null to wormhole space in increasing order. High-sec you typically get a couple frigates per belt (nothing in 1.0 and 0.9), maybe cruisers in low sec, maybe battleships in null, and sleepers in W-space.

Otherwise, the only difference between the empire areas is that the rats are set up to be vulnerable to the racial ships of that empire, so that using the local empire's ships to hunt the local rats is easy-mode and newbie-friendly.

If you want to put your ship to the test, you'll probably be better off asking for missions from the agents. You can get up to battleships, in high sec, if you grind your standings (through lower level agents) to the higher level agents.

belt ratting in highsec is pointless, do missions or run cosmic anomalys/combat exploring is considerably better isk

Confirming. The NPCs in high-sec areas are generally not a threat. Hell... a half-ass tanked mining barge can permatank the NPCs with passive shield regen alone.

Exceptions do apply though.
Drifters (including Circadian Seekers and such) do pose a HIGH risk to anyone who aggresses them. They payout comes in the form the materials you can salvage from the wrecks.
And there are random NPC factions that roam around various belts and systems. They won't shoot first and you can net a decent 2 mil or so from them.

My recommendation would be to search for Serpentis Hideaways and Refuge sites through your Probe Scanner window. They escalate to 3/10's which are a rated DED site that can drop nice A-Type Frigate prop mods. You'll have to head for Gallente regions for them but imo are better for a beginner. Angel sites I believe only escalate to 5/10 in highsec and would be a bit out of your league if you're newer.

If you are talking belt rats and by type you mean faction then it will typically be Angel rats in Minmitar space.

We can divide rats into two catagories.

1: How tough they are.
Hisec has the weakest rats. A few frigates is typical. Payout is low for the time spent finding and shooting them.
Losec the rats get tougher. They're bigger, there's more of them, the bounties on them are higher, but you're more at risk of being attacked by another player who wants to put your ship on one of their killmails.
Null, a step up in difficulty and also in bounty payout.

2. What type of rat they are.
There are different rat factions. Each faction has it's own damage strengths and weaknesses. As ergh mentioned. Angel Cartel rats are the most common in Minmatar space. Other NPC empires have different rat factions prowling around.

Here's a brief guide on the types of damage each rat faction does, and what types of damage to use against them.
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/NPC_Damage_Types

Instead of hanging around in asteroid belts, try looking for combat site anomalies. Keep your probe scanner window open, but don't bother carrying a probe launcher or probes. If there are any combat sites, they'll be shown in the probe scanner window accurately enough that you'll be able to warp straight to them without needing to scan for them with probes. There will typically be several waves of rats in each combat site. You'll earn more isk clearing combat sites in hisec compared to looking for belt rats in hisec.

Here's Eve-Uni's basic guide to combat anomalies. http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Cosmic_Anomalies

Sometimes when you clear a combat anomaly site it will spawn an "escalation site", which is a tougher rat combat site in another nearby system. You will get a message if an escalation site has spawned for you, telling you which system the site is in. Escalation sites only spawn when certain conditions have been met. It's happened for me multiple times but I don't run combat sites regularly so I'm not sure what the exact conditions need to be to spawn an escalation site.

You can make something like 30 millions/hours from rating belts in Null Sec if you chain them. I don't feel the right to tell you if it's enjoyable or profitable or not. It's up to you.

What is chaining : if you kill the whole bunch of rats in an asteroid, they will respawn later (about 20mn) elsewhere in the system, but you have no control over what will respawn, it could be some worthless frigates and cruisers instead of juicy battleships.
So the tactic is :
1) When you land on an asteroid belt, if there are battleships, kill ONLY the battleships. Keep the smaller ships alive (unless one scrams/webs you). That way, when the respawn time comes, the server will complete the existing spawn with new battleships of the same category.
2) When you land on an asteroid belt where there is no battleship, kill everything. That way, when the respawn time comes, the server will create a brand new random spawn in the system, which could this time very well contain some battleships.

Rating in belts is also one of the few situations where you can reasonably use a brawler ship for PvE, as you can warp at zero and mostly land not far from the NPCs.

Of course the min/maxers will tell you that it's not worth it, that it's boring, etc...
But look at it that way : there is much less competiton for the belts, so once you have found a good system or two to farm (with something like 15 belts), you are quite sure that no one will come to take your bread.

Last thing : in Null Sec, there can be sometimes some nasty spawns, like a dreadnough or some sleepers. Stay alert ;)

Domination Nephilim - Angel Cartel

Calm down miner. As you pointed out, people think they can get away with stuff they would not in rl... Like for example illegal mining... - Ima Wreckyou*

What she really meant to say is "kill them, kill them all, then shoot their wrecks just from spite", I'm sure.
Explosive damage type works well against angel cartel, btw. :)

I was told that the chaining mechanic was removed a while back. That now you just get a fresh spawn. Does anyone know if this is true?

On upgraded null sec systems I tend to get low level rats if I am the first one to belt rat in the system. If I run from belt to belt full clearing everything it seems the the spawns get better. It the belts have been run that day it seems that you get at least one BS in the majority of spawns.

That was my understanding as well. I believe players farming Faction NPC's just before or right after downtime also had something to do with it.

Anyway, as for the OP's question, to start I suggest running Angel Hideaway and Burrow anomalies. They have a good chance to spawn Commander NPC's. Also if into doing exploration, run the Hideout and Lookout exploration sites.

That is what i experience too : at start there are often smaller ships, then once you've cleared them, you mostly get better spawns, but if i kill only the battleships, they respawn, it really still seem to work. Also, the mechanism is a bit more complex, as the spawns sometimes move, and they even sometimes flee when they see that they are losing the fight Big smile

Just FYI you can make 30 mil/tick running havens in a BS. I havent belt ratted null since system upgrades was deployed.

You can make about 8 million bounty ticks from belt ratting. But bounty ticks are not what you are going for with belt ratting. You get a lot more opportunities for special spawns. On average every 20 spawns there will be a special spawn and about half the time that will be faction and the other half will be hauler spawns. Keep in mind this is an average so it's not guaranteed that the 20th spawn will be a special one but you get them fairly often.

Best thing that I've gotten from a belt rat faction spawn was a Nightmare BPC. Sometimes it's just crappy ammo but I've gotten many 80-180 million isk faction module drops. Also belt rats seem to drop more loot, but that was more of a thing before the reprocessing nerf.
